Dear Alki UCC,
Today is Maundy Thursday. Maundy is the Latin word for command. On this day, we are invited to remember Jesus’ command to his disciples for them to love one another as he loved them.
On this day of Holy Week, as we wade ever closer to the mystery of resurrection, we pause and wonder at this teaching of Jesus.
We will meet this evening downstairs in Anderson Hall at 6:00 pm for a simple meal, conversation, readings and songs. We will celebrate Holy Communion, serving the feast to one another.
If you can’t make it to our service, I invite you to have a mindful meal on your own this evening. A Maundy Thursday meal is simple. No elaborate planning or standing for hours over a stove required. You may wish to set the table and light a candle.
If you often eat in front of the TV or on the go, it might feel unusual to eat in the quiet with nothing else happening! What do you notice? Consider what it might have felt like to be in the room at the last supper that Jesus had with his disciples before he died, and his teaching to love one another as we have been loved by God. What do you wonder about? How do you respond?
We follow in the footsteps of Jesus, from the meal to remember to the shadows of Good Friday. We must move through the darkness to reach the dawn. Blessings to you on the rest of this most Holy Week.
In Hope,
Pastor Emily

Outreach Swapping Our Plastics:
a Work in Progress
|
Wrapping Up our Lenten Plastics Fast The Outreach/Social Justice Ministry team thanks all of you for listening and participating in our Lenten Plastics Fast for 2025.
This was our second year addressing the issue of plastics in our environment and its impact upon us and the earth, utilizing the Lenten concept of fasting to engage in self-reflection of our personal appetite for consuming goods and its impact on the earth and other people (re: developing countries bearing the burden of our garbage, so much of it plastic).
We hope that you learned a few things and are inspired to create change within your own lives to not only improve your own health (re: reduce microplastic exposure) but to improve the health of the earth by reducing plastic demand and waste.
Further reading and action Here is an interesting article "7 Foods and Beverages That Have the Most Microplastics (and what to do instead)":
And here is an opportunity to advocate for plastic recycling reform in Washington State:
We'll reconvene in about six months to share more ideas and what we've been doing to reduce our use and exposure to plastics, and keep up the use of the Sustainable Cubbies to reduce plastics going into the landfill! You are all making a difference — every little but counts!
Thank you and blessings from the Outreach/Social Justice Team: Aly H, Julia C, Joe A, Lisa G, Ann P, Cinda S, and Nancy J

Growing Forward: Alki UCC’s Tree Stewardship Continues
|
In 2021-22, the Alki UCC Outreach Team joined Grow it Forward, becoming part of a new network of gardeners across the greater Seattle area who grow native tree and shrub seedlings for habitat restoration wherever it’s needed.
Learn more about Grow It Forward HERE.
After our first season, Julia and Joe participated in a restoration planting with trees grown by volunteers like us.
Read more in The Seattle Times
In 2023, we transitioned from cedar seedlings to firs —
and like many others, we noticed the firs have a much slower growth rate. The Outreach Team continues to nurture 100 firs planted in 2023, in addition to our original 100. We also lovingly adopted 200 firs from Anne Van Dyne after her passing last summer.
Julia, Joe, Alyson, and Mike each care for 100 firs at their homes, bringing our total to approximately 500 fir trees, ranging in height from 4 to 21 inches.
This past week, Grow It Forward requested updates on the number, size, and health of our trees to assess their readiness for possible planting this fall. We’ll keep the congregation posted as we learn more about whether our trees are ready for their final homes.
As always, you’re invited to help maintain the trees—or even host a batch of 100 seedlings yourself! We’ve found Grow It Forward to be a dedicated and supportive partner in our shared mission to care for creation. — Alki UCC Outreach Team
Julia C adds:
Once the seedlings have grown for up to 2 1/2 years and are more durable, with established root systems, they are collected by volunteers with pickup trucks and transported for transplanting at the Green River, Skagit and other regional restoration sites. Many Grow it Forward members join the dedicated group of employees and volunteers for this critical phase.
Establishing trees along river banks helps create shade that cools water temperatures to healthy levels for salmon. The solution will take time. But, as the saying goes, "The best time to plant trees was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today." The replanted seedlings will grow into a new forest of native trees and other vegetation, eventually producing their own seeds to make the next generation. Our Grand-daughter asked, "How can we get more trees on the Earth?" This is a great way.

Heartfelt Best Wishes and a Fond Farewell to Alki Co-op Preschool
|
On April 4 the Alki Cooperative Preschool, a treasured community resource and a valued building partner for decades, hosted a Farewell Open House in Jr. Hall.
Vicky S reports: It was very upbeat and fun, with many former parents, children, teachers and parent instructors attending. One parent there had been in a two-year-old class with our daughter, Emily!
Julia C’s sister-in-law, Linda, reported that Julia’s brother, Dan, had attended preschool there, affirming that the co-op preschool has been there for at least 70 years!
Mostly it was a celebration of the very longstanding Alki Cooperative Preschool and a look forward to their future at Youngstown.
# # #
Beginning for the 2025-2026 school year, Alki Co-op will be moving to its new home at West Seattle's Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.
Alki UCC is deeply grateful for the many, many years that the Alki Cooperative Preschool has had their home in our building.
We wish all the children, families, volunteers and staff the very best for many years to come.
