Louise Tillotson Teaching Fellowship Accepting Applications
The application for the Louise Tillotson Teaching Fellowship is now live!

In 2024, the Fellowship was paused for redesign to deepen its impact on local schools and communities. Beginning in 2025, the Fellowship will feature a facilitated learning cohort, stipends, and funding to support for a passion project undertaken by the fellows.

This is a fantastic opportunity for early career through veteran educators. The 2025 fellow cohort will play a key role in shaping the program, ensuring it remains relevant and meaningful to educators’ needs—a fellowship for local educators, designed by local educators.

Additional information about the 2025 Fellowship can be found here:
https://tillotsonfund.org/louise-tillotson-teaching-fellowship/

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund representatives and partners on a rolling basis until May 12th. Finalists will be invited to in-person interviews. The first LTTF cohort will be announced by June 1st, 2025.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Bill Church, Consultant for The Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund. Bill's email is bill@crcs.works.

Experience the Community Changemaker Challenge
DCN websiteHigh school educators, are you interested in learning more about the Community Changemaker Challenge for your students?

Educators are invited to attend the event to see the program in action. This year's event is Friday, May 16, 2025 at the University of New Hampshire from 9:30 to 2:00.

Every year high school students from New Hampshire and New England come together to share their solutions to pressing problems they care about. Judges from local businesses, nonprofits, and higher education ask these students questions, as they compete against teams from other schools.

This year there is a record number of students and teams participating, coming from the following schools: 2nd Nature Academy, Cardigan Mountain School, Derryfield School, Exeter High School, Franklin High School, Governor’s Academy, Hinsdale High School, Hollis Brookline High School, Hopkinton High School, Kearsarge High School, Lynnfield High School, Nashua High School South, Oyster River High School, Phillips Exeter Academy, Portsmouth High School, and Proctor Academy.

If you plan to attend as a guest, please register here

Youth Mental Health First Aid ~ Online
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth. This training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

First Aiders will complete a 2-hour, self-paced online course, and then participate in a 6-hour, instructor-led video conference.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course focuses on recognizing the patterns of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and appearance that show there might be a challenge rather than on a specific disorder. You will learn an action plan for non-crisis and crisis scenarios. By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of Youth Mental Health First Aid and the role of the First Aider
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact youth
  • Explain the impact of traumatic experiences and the role of resilience on adolescent development
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to non-crisis situations
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations
  • Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Youth Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation

Schedule a School Visit through May 11th:
Traveling Smithsonian Exhibit in Jefferson

The Jefferson Historical Society (JHS) is very pleased to announce that they will be hosting (in conjunction with the New Hampshire Humanities Council and local partners the Town of Jefferson, the Marc A Hurzerler M.D. Library, and the Heartwood Public Charter School) a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution: "Crossroads: Change in Rural America".

JHS is very interested in having school groups visit the exhibit, which highlights the evolving landscape of rural America.  Designed for small-town museums, libraries, and cultural organizations, "Crossroads" will serve as a community meeting place for conversations about how rural America has changed.  The focus of the exhibit is to raise people's understanding about their own history, the joys and challenges of a living rural life, how change has impacted their community, and to prompt discussion of goals for the future.  This interactive exhibit is most appropriate for 4th grade and higher but all are welcome to attend.

The exhibit will be at the Jefferson Community Center (former elementary school), 178 Meadows Rd., Jefferson, NH 03583 through Saturday, May 11, 2025.  They plan to be open 40 hours per week (closed Sundays) and are willing to work with schools on whatever hours are convenient for them for a visit.  Admission is free to the exhibit.

Crossroads at Jefferson Historical Society

Since the JHS is an all volunteer organization the best way for schools to arrange a visit is to call Adele Woods at (603)723-5540 or email woods.in.nh@gmail.com.

4 Things to Know About Financial Aid Offers
Decision Day is approaching for college-bound high school seniors. For most families, financial aid offers from colleges are a key factor in the decision-making process. Here are four things to know about financial aid offers:

  1. You don’t have to accept federal loans. Most students who complete the FAFSA will qualify for federal student loans, and these will usually be listed on your financial aid award letter; while it’s generally recommended that students maximize federal programs before utilizing alternative financing methods, it’s up to you and your family whether or not to take advantage of these loans.
  2. Subsidized loans are preferable to unsubsidized loans. Many (though not all) financial aid offers will include both subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans. With a subsidized loan, the government pays the interest during specified periods, such as while you’re in school. With unsubsidized loans, you are responsible for the interest that accumulates during all periods, including while you’re in school.

  3. Private scholarships can affect your institutional aid. Your net cost is your total cost of attendance minus federal aid and any grants and scholarships awarded you by the school. If there’s a gap between that number and what you can actually afford, private scholarships are a great way to bridge that gap. Just be sure to ask the school whether your scholarships will affect the aid they’re offering you. Some schools apply private scholarships to your need-based aid, meaning it won’t reduce your net cost.

  4. Work-study doesn’t reduce the billed amount. While included on a financial aid award letter (for eligible students), Federal Work Study funds don’t reduce the billed amount. The amount on the award letter represents the maximum amount a student may earn through work-study during that academic period.
