Dear Alki UCC,
Every year, we reenact the parade of palms and hosannas. We take a branch from the earth, gather outdoors and process into the building because this Sunday is Palm Sunday.
The parade marks the beginning of Holy Week, the days we have to prepare ourselves to remember the mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus.
I know that some of you have some feelings about that. As in: How are we supposed to believe that? Did it really happen? Can we skip Good Friday and go right to Easter? We get in our heads about it.
This year, I invite you to wade into the ambiguity. The not knowing. If we knew for sure, it wouldn’t be faith. So plunge into the mystery of it. The story, the symbols, the deep meaning.
Richard Rhor wrote that “we forget too often that the only possible language of religion is metaphor . . . It is all language to describe the indescribable.”
So encounter the stories. Follow them all the way through to the path to the cross. If they leave you with more questions than answers, you are right on track. This is faith, my friends, we are smack-dab in the messy middle of unknowing. This is where mystery waits.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Sermon and a Time with Children
by Rev. Emily Tanis-Likkel. Scripture: Luke 24:1-12
Grief is a healthy response to Jesus’ death
and a valid way to enter worship on Easter morning.
And yet, the women at the empty tomb are given hope
amidst their mourning. The other disciples
don’t believe the women’s message, but Peter,
living in the in-between of grief and hope,
runs to the tomb to see for himself.
Grieving doesn’t have to make us hopeless.
Hope can compel us to take action
when we are deep in grief.

Outreach Swapping Our Plastics:
a Work in Progress
|
After worship this past Sunday, our team gave a brief introduction about Art to Save the Sea, an organization creating art from plastic recovered from our ocean beaches. We viewed a short video called "Washed Ashore, Art to Save the Sea" and learned just how permanent plastic is and how amazing and powerful art can be:
Link here to view this amazing video.
After taking in this amazing story, and being reminded that all the plastic we have ever used in our lives is still here, we shared what we have been working on during Lent to lessen the use of plastic in our homes.
We all had overlapping and different experiences as we search for replacement products or in some cases let go of items all together. We discussed items like ziplock bags, cling (Saran) wrap, dishwasher soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, Tupperware, dental floss, trash bags, alternative produce bags and buying patterns ... the list goes on. Many people in the group were able to offer recommendations on items they were trying and stores where they found plastic-alternative products. We plan to reconvene in the parlor in six months with more solutions and sharing as we continue to find appropriate swaps for the plastic, micro and macro, in our lives. In closing we challenge everyone to find the best solution for home large trash bags, is it better to reuse old plastic bags or is a compostable or paper bag better for the environment? Thank you all for trying new things and sharing what you learn, this is an on going challenge as there are so many small things, including toothbrushes, that require attention. — Outreach and Social Justice Team
