Alki UCC Weekly Messenger May 1, 2025
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

The Annual Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Church of Christ took place last weekend in Yakima. Julia P, Cinda S and I were glad to represent you.

It was a meeting light on business, as we had no resolutions on which to vote for the first time that I can remember. We did vote on the budget, which included a deficit of about $58,000 which will be covered by reserves.

Despite the deficit, and four church closures over the last few years, our Conference is growing. The primary way we are growing is in bringing in Samoan congregations, seven churches over the last three years.

This diversity of culture is stretching and evolving the Conference in beautiful, and at times uncomfortable ways. Several people of color spoke from the heart about their experience of racism in our Conference. Stories about white people saying that they wanted leaders of color, and then not listening to them or respecting them once they were in leadership.

Confronting our culture of white supremacy mythology and nurturing true belonging is our growing edge. Beginning this year, all clergy will be required to take antiracism training every three years. This is one way that we will work to actively dismantle racism in our conference. I pray for humility for myself and for us all, that our majority white conference will engage in deep listening with love as our foundation.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Stewardship Kick-Off/
New Worship Series Begins this Sunday
Let’s Do This Together!

"So let’s do it — full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. God always keeps God’s word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but encouraging one another, especially as we see the big Day approaching." — Hebrews 10:25 The Message

In this worship series, together with our Stewardship campaign, we will be invited to consider how we might come together with a spirit of abundance, not scarcity. Even and especially now in this country, we must live out the counter-narrative of loving our enemies, bridging divides and widening our welcome.

Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going
and encourage one another, for we all belong.

Let’s BE the church!
 Let’s do this together!

"White was no ethnicity. It did not embody history or a sense of place... White was a political designation." — David Billings

The United States of America was both designed to be a place where we collectively recognize "all (humans) are created equal," and a place where that equality was originally limited only to White men in the ownership caste.

As the United States as expanded its definition of human, Whiteness has continued to be an issue, one our society has yet to fully grapple with. In this 6 week course, we will read from great 20th and 21st century thinkers about how they have come to understand the power of Whiteness and what can be done to dismantle it in the name of "liberty and justice for all."

"Godly Play"
this Sunday
after Worship
Have you longed for a spiritual practice to meet the needs of your progressive family?

Come and experience Godly Play at Alki United Church of Christ!

The Godly Play® method is a curriculum of spiritual practice exploring the mystery of God’s presence in our lives. Godly Play practice teaches us to listen for God and to make authentic and creative responses to God’s call in our lives. It is based on the knowledge that children are already spiritual beings. In Godly Play, all are invited to wonder.

Godly Play is a creative, imaginative approach to Christian formation and spiritual guidance.
Godly Play values process, openness, discovery, community and relationships.

Godly Play at Alki UCC is for kids ages 3-12 and their caregivers. Children and adults explore spirituality alongside one another in our circle.

Our next sessions are Sundays, May 3 and
June 1 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Room 22 (Religious Education room on the office level).

For more information, please contact Pastor Emily.
