Dear Alki UCC,
This is what mentoring looks like: when the kindergartner asks to pass the plate for the offering in church and has never done it before and the first grader takes her by the hand to show her the way.
She patiently teaches, using experiential and embodied learning, encouraging gestures and warm smiles to communicate: yes, this row next. That’s the way. A non-verbal cue here, a hushed instruction there, confidence growing.
The two walk together to the front, and the newest leader hands the offering plate to the pastor. The teaching ends with a gesture that communicates volumes: you did it! Now it’s time to rejoin your family, and here is where you are sitting.
What many of us witnessed last Sunday was truly the most beautiful example of mentoring I have seen.
We grown-ups don’t always get this right. We forget to mentor one another. Will we let the children show us the way? Will we allow them to teach us?
What we may lack in numbers of children at Alki UCC we make up for in spades with the astounding leadership skills of the youngest among us. Let us follow their example.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

A Future Story of Alki UCC
|
About six years ago, in late 2019, our church community went through a transitional period of change after our longtime settled pastor retired. It was time for decision-making about what was next for us. This included a purposeful discernment about who we wanted to become. The process involved “house meetings” where we gathered in groups of 6 to 8 in designated leaders' homes to discuss our future. With about 97% participation across several members’ homes, we developed a future story involving a music program, children’s program, multi-faith worship and 12-Step programs within a “community center.”
We were so excited to call our next pastor, who could help us lead through this! Then, in March 2020, everything stopped due to COVID-19. We had to pivot quickly. After several transitional pastors, we called Pastor Emily as a three-quarter-time designated-term pastor. Six years later, we are on our way to our future story!
And our future of Alki UCC is bustling! This vibrant atmosphere thrives because of our community's dedication and shared efforts. Everyone contributes meaningfully when organizing community events, volunteering for outreach programs or maintaining the shared spaces we cherish. Our weekly gatherings and wider collaborations remind us that Alki UCC is not just a place of worship but a beacon of hope and connection for many.
Thanks to your generosity of time, talent and treasure, we all have stories about why we love the Alki UCC Community.
This time of stewardship is when we ALL plan to provide financial support for your community's missions and ministries! Because we are self-governed, we are also self-funded. This community of Alki UCC has a few sources of income that cover the expenses of the building, office equipment and supplies, staff, Ministry Teams and support for the wider UCC and other missions. The most important source of income to support our future is your financial contribution with a pledge of sustainable giving.
In the coming weeks, you will hear stories from our community’s past, present and plans for our future. And we need to do all of this responsibly. This church community has been around for more than 100 years, and we hope that this community can continue well into the future! It is up to all of us!
During this Stewardship season, we invite you to help shape what is possible for our beloved Alki UCC community in the years ahead. In the coming weeks, we ask that you listen to these stories from our community. As you do when thinking about your future, think about what matters most. In June, we will ask that you please prayerfully consider a sustainable pledge of support to help us continue our shared ministry.
The plan is to be transparent about our finances, so please feel free to call, email, or text to schedule time with me or any of our council members!
Now, Let’s Do this….. Together!

"White was no ethnicity. It did not embody history or a sense of place... White was a political designation." — David Billings
The United States of America was both designed to be a place where we collectively recognize "all (humans) are created equal," and a place where that equality was originally limited only to White men in the ownership caste.
As the United States as expanded its definition of human, Whiteness has continued to be an issue, one our society has yet to fully grapple with. In this 6 week course, we will read from great 20th and 21st century thinkers about how they have come to understand the power of Whiteness and what can be done to dismantle it in the name of "liberty and justice for all."

Whale Trail Petition Calls for Alki Point Access
|
Founded in 2008 by Donna Sandstrom, The Whale Trail was created to "build awareness of the endangered southern resident orcas throughout their range." From 16 inaugural sites in Washington there are now more than 150 spanning the west coast from California to British Columbia.
The Whale Trail features four sites in West Seattle, including Charles Richey Sr. Viewpoint on Beach Drive — the best place in Seattle to watch whales from shore!
Donna and other community members recently met with SDOT in the Alki UCC Parlor to discuss the City’s changes to Alki Point, which have had a harmful impact on safety, accessibility and marine conservation programs in the area. For example, “Street Closed” signs have effectively kept people away, and cut them off from a public shoreline, city park and marine reserve.
The group is asking the City to find solutions that better meet the needs of the wider community.
