Dear Alki UCC,
I have the joy and privilege of serving as co-chair of the Church Development Committee (CDC) of our Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Church of Christ. The CDC’s primary duties are to consult, assist and provide funding in partnership with those involved in church formation or transformation. Most of our budget for helping churches comes from Strengthen the Church, one of five special mission offerings of the United Church of Christ. Earlier this year, our committee provided seed money for antiracism and community engagement projects at 12 churches.
One of these projects is “The Gathering,” launched on May 2 by The Christian Worship Center in Anchorage with a vibrant youth event of spirit-filled music and dance. This event brought in much interest from the wider community.
Rooted in the United Church of Christ’s motto, “That they may all be one,” The Gathering is dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers by promoting cultural understanding. Through workshops and community forums, it uplifts the histories, traditions, and contributions of marginalized communities. The initiative also provides direct support to those affected by racism through mentorship programs, scholarships for underrepresented youth, mental health counseling and legal assistance.
At its inaugural event, The Gathering welcomed 350 youth and empowered them to connect with one another through dance, music, and personal testimony.
The experience was nothing short of powerful. It even made the local news!
According to Rev. Fa'atauvaa Alaelua (aka Va'a), lead pastor of Christian Worship Center, “we were inspired by the (BIPOC clergy) retreat at the Franklinton Center at Bricks in North Carolina, a site once marked by oppression and now transformed into a place of empowerment, we are determined to create a program that liberates and uplifts everyone affected by systemic injustice.”
Our offering to Strengthen the Church directly funds projects like “The Gathering.” Half of what churches receive for this special offering stays right here in the Pacific Northwest Conference, and half goes to the national setting to fund a variety of church vitality initiatives.
Please give generously to Strengthen the Church on June 8, Pentecost Sunday!
Peace,
Pastor Emily

Calling All Cooks!
Food/Hosts Needed for WIN Hot Lunch Saturday, June 7
|
Alki UCC is joining forces with Admiral UCC and Westside UU's to provide the Westside Interfaith Network's (WIN) hot lunch on Saturday, June 7.
We need casseroles, salads, roasted vegetables and desserts to feed about 150 people. And for people to help hand out donations and supplies to the guests.
Join us in acts of resilience and justice by making and delivering food and love to our marginalized neighbors! All the more fun by combining efforts with other faith community friends.

Moment of Stewardship
by Faith Formation
May 25, 2025
|
Spiritual formation is “is the nurture and deepening of the human response to the grace that is lavished upon [us].”
(Douglas V. Steere, Together in Solitude, p. 4.)
In former days, the Faith Formation Team might have been called the Religious or Christian Education Committee. Whatever the name, the task remains the same: growth in our faith.
Throughout the past year, Faith Formation has been focused on weekly Bible study as a place where we engage each other around scripture as a vehicle of faith formation.
Pastor Emily started a class after worship for children and caregivers called “Godly Play,” to foster faith formation for children and families/caregivers.
Faith Formation has also sponsored/co-sponsored events such as book and video discussions and mini-retreats. Topics for future discussion groups might include racism, the Holocaust, Israel and Palestine, Trans Rights, Spirituality and Technology and The Changing Role of the Church in Our Society, to name a few. If you are interested in any of these topics, especially if you would like to take the lead on a particular topic, please talk to Rev. Penny or Pastor Emily.
We are all involved in the work of faith formation. Attending worship or participating in your own spiritual practice is an act of faith formation. Serving on the Social Justice/Community Outreach, Caring Community, Worship and Music Teams, as well as one of the standing committees or church council is part of the work of faith formation.
Participating in Alki UCC's Stewardship program strengthens our community and supports faith formation as individuals and as a community. An important part of our ministry is reaching out to the wider community and embodying an example of living faith.
— Rev. Penny Matthews
leader for Faith Formation Team

Godly Play this Sunday after Worship
|
Have you longed for a spiritual practice to meet the needs of your progressive family? Come and experience Godly Play at Alki United Church of Christ!
The Godly Play® method is a curriculum of spiritual practice exploring the mystery of God’s presence in our lives. Godly Play practice teaches us to listen for God and to make authentic and creative responses to God’s call in our lives. It is based on the knowledge that children are already spiritual beings. In Godly Play, all are invited to wonder.
Godly Play at Alki UCC is for kids ages 3-12 and their caregivers. Children and adults explore spirituality alongside one another in our circle.
This Sunday's session is from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Room 22 (Religious Education room on the office level). This week's story is "Holy Baptism" Godly Play is a creative, imaginative approach to Christian formation and spiritual guidance. Godly Play values process, openness, discovery, community and relationships. For more information, please contact Pastor Emily. I wonder what part you will like best . . . ?
