Dear Alki UCC,
I LOVE Pentecost! 50 days after Easter, we gather to tell the story of the Holy Spirit swooping into the gathered assembly as a rushing wind, descending on each one as tongues of fire.
We wear red and wave streamers in the air. We hear the ancient words of Scripture, imagining the bewilderment and amazement of those hearing the good news of God’s love in their own languages. The Spirit that day was absolutely inclusive and accessible. The Spirit always is.
This Pentecost Sunday we welcome new members of our church. Those who have said “yes” to this community of faith. When we say that “yes,” we affirm our baptism, the marking with water to make visible the grace that is invisible. We all will have an opportunity to remember our baptism this Sunday as the whole congregation will be sprinkled with water as a reminder of the covenant of God’s grace.
This is not the sacrament of baptism, but a ritual for being renewed as we remember or consider the waters of baptism. However, if any would like to be baptized, please let me know that you desire the sacrament, the water will be ready! Just as those gathered so long ago heard about God’s deeds of power in their own languages, exactly as they needed to hear, receive the water according to your need. Be amazed by the inclusion and accessibility. The welcome. This is the Spirit for all.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

The Caring Community/Fellowship team has created many ways to make connections and build relationships with our members, friends of the church and the community. Sending cards, emails and making calls is our way of saying: "I see you!"
We are intentional about caring for others through simple acts of kindness, shared celebrations and offering help during difficult times. We offer rides to appointments, provide meals, shop for anything that is needed or stop by for a visit and check-in.
We are happy to provide flowers for the altar thanks to Patty M and Judy M and sometimes flowers from Ned C's garden. Coffee Hour gives all of us an opportunity to share our stories and get to know one another better. Thank you to all who have signed up to serve coffee, tea and wonderful treats. Another thank you to those who have volunteered to be Liturgists and read the scripture texts during Sunday worship.
Members of our team have participated in and help host Fellowship events such as the Progressive Dinner, Tuesday Night Out with the church/neighborhood to enjoy good food and listen to Asia singing, the Church Retreat at Pilgrim Firs, the Pride celebration on Alki Beach and many other events that bring us together ... sometimes to raise funds for the church and always to be part of the church together.
Participating in Alki UCC's Stewardship program strengthens our Caring Community so that we can support those in need and expand our Fellowship activities.

We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort the hearts of all who grieve and hold them close. We pray for Julie and Bryson who mourn the death of their spouse and dad, Rich.
We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
We pray for Vicky S' friend Sue; Julia C's cousin Scott M, facing a critical health challenge; our Peruvian immigrant friends and for all who seek peace and safety in our country; for Sandy J's cousin Barbara; Dan K facing various health issues; Rev. Joan C; Cinda's mother Jackie S; Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene; Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise; and Nick L.
We pray for our wider world.
We pray for all the people and places in our world affected by war. We ask for wisdom for decision-makers and strength for justice-seekers. We pray for victims of violence, for refugees and asylum-seekers. We pray for all who are hungry, desperate, and in need of support. In all of these things, we trust that you are with us. In all of these things, we ask for you to strengthen us. Help us to see you in those around us. Help us to love as you love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
