Alki UCC Weekly Messenger June 12, 2025
From the Music Director
“Words make you think, music makes you feel,
a song makes you feel a thought”
— E.Y Harburg

I am so very excited for this weekend’s worship service, Choir Sunday! Worship this week will be led collectively by the Worship and Music Team, Alki UCC Community Choir, Pastor Emily and myself as we invite you to join us into our world as music-makers.

Alki UCC has a rich history of music-making and this Sunday is a time to fill the sanctuary with song, soul and a joyful noise that reflects the depth of our faith and the power of our communal voice. Our service this Sunday invites everyone to not just listen — but participate.

As we lift our voices in everything from psalms to contemporary anthems like Reckless Love and True Colors, we’ll reflect on why we sing: to connect, to heal, to celebrate, to grieve, to transform.

One of the morning's highlights will be a guided vocal warm-up, inviting us to prepare our bodies and spirits to fully engage with the music. Our beloved Alki UCC Community Choir will be front and center to offer a powerful lineup of musical offerings. An exploration of what scripture says about music is woven throughout with readings from “The Words of Her Mouth: Songs for the Struggle” led by members of the Worship & Music Team and our church leaders.

Whether you’re a lifelong choir member or someone who simply sings in the car, this service is for you. Bring your whole self  tender or triumphant  and prepare to be moved.

Let’s make a joyful noise  beautiful, bold, messy, magnificent. And above all, let us be reminded: We are all instruments of praise.

With a song in my heart,
— Daniel
UCC "Strengthen the Church"
Special Offering this Sunday
This week we receive the Strengthen the Church offering, one of five annual special mission offerings of the UCC.

These funds support church transformation and vitality initiatives. Half of what churches receive stays right here in the Pacific Northwest Conference, and half goes to the national setting.

Please give generously this Sunday to support our wider church!  More information here.

Donate online via alkiucc.org and enter "Strengthen the Church" in the dedication line.
Stewardship Team News
The 2025 Stewardship Campaign is now in full swing! You have heard from most of your ministry teams about the past, present and future of our Alki United Church of Christ community and how each of us plays a role in making this a vibrant and beautiful place to worship.

And please join us as we celebrate with the Worship Logistics and Worship & Music teams this Choir Sunday.

The Stewardship packets were distributed in person this past Sunday, June 8, after Gary reviewed our draft budget for the upcoming year. If you missed the opportunity to pick up your packet, it will arrive in your mailbox this week with a copy of the draft budget.

Regardless of how you received your packets, please take a moment to prayerfully consider how you will support your community with a financial pledge.

There are several ways to return your pledge: mail, in person, or online. IF you did not receive your packet, please email the church office or pick one up at worship this Sunday.

Then join us on June 22 as we celebrate our community's commitment to the future of Alkk UCC! As a special bonus, there will be a drawing for prizes for those who turn in their pledge on or before Sunday, June 22!  — Shannon P for the Stewardship Team

Upcoming:
Stewardship Sunday is on June 22. Join in a special celebration to celebrate giving and hand deliver your Pledge card during worship.

The Annual Meeting of the Congregation on Sunday, June 29 is embedded in 10:00 am worship, highlighted by a vote on the budget and council executive team

We need a quorum of members to approve the outcome of both votes. Please plan to join. The Council is providing Hospitality Hour Goodies.

We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort the hearts of all who grieve and hold them close. We pray for Julie and Bryson who mourn the death of their spouse and dad, Rich.

We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
We pray for Vicky S' friend Sue; Julia C's cousin Scott M, facing a critical health challenge; our Peruvian immigrant friends and for all who seek peace and safety in our country; for Sandy J's cousin Barbara; Dan K facing various health issues; Rev. Joan C; Cinda's mother Jackie S; Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene; Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise; and Nick L.

We pray for our wider world.
We pray for all the people and places in our world affected by war. We ask for wisdom for decision-makers and strength for justice-seekers. We pray for victims of violence, for refugees and asylum-seekers. We pray for all who are hungry, desperate, and in need of support.

In all of these things, we trust that you are with us. In all of these things, we ask for you to strengthen us. Help us to see you in those around us. Help us to love as you love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
