Alki UCC Weekly Messenger June 19, 2025
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Today is Juneteenth, the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Every June 19 we remember that Texas and Louisiana did not hear the news of liberation for a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

My sister-in-law Natasha Tripplett tells it this way in her award-winning picture book, Juneteenth Is:

“Juneteenth is remembering lives long before our memories. Sweat on our brows, cotton in our fingers, the straw that broke our mighty back. The proclamation took two years to be proclaimed. June 19, 1865, The American Day of Freedom. General Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and read the order: slaves are free . . . Former slaves marched in the first Juneteenth parade. We have been marching ever since. We march in celebration. We march in unity. Proudly we march on the land of the free in bravery. Juneteenth is all of us.”

Juneteenth is a collective remembering. In a time of division in our country, let us be united, and as we have been saying in this season of Stewardship, Let’s Do This Together!

Juneteenth is all of us, every race and creed. Let us learn our country’s actual history. Let us confess our complicity in the systems of oppression. Let us amplify voices of liberation. And let’s do it together. Juneteenth is all of us.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Stewardship Team News
The 2025 Stewardship Campaign is wrapping up! You have heard from all of your ministry teams and the council executive leadership about the past, present and future of our Alki United Church of Christ community and how each of us plays a role in making this a vibrant and beautiful place to worship.

Your financial commitments matter to the future of this community now more than ever, as we grow into the future as disciples of Jesus Christ.

We have so much to offer each other and the wider community ... your financial pledge can make it possible. If you have not done so yet, please take a moment to prayerfully consider how you will support your community with a financial pledge.

Please return your pledge by THIS Sunday, June 22

In person during worship this Sunday
or

Extra pledge cards will be available during Sunday worship.

Sunday's Stewardship Moment
Worship and Music
Your Worship and Music ministry team was delighted to share Choir Sunday with you! We hope you found meaning in the service, and that it spoke to you in some way.

If you were intrigued by breaking out of our regular service format, or had some ideas of what would have been better, that means you would be a great addition to our ministry team. Please consider joining us! We would love to have new creative energy and fresh perspectives to bring to our worship and music planning process.

A giant shout-out to music director Daniel Self, who took the lead in designing the service. As I mentioned during our stewardship moment on Sunday, our team supports an increased budget proposal that Daniel put forward for Council consideration. He most definitely has taken the challenge to grow the music program to heart. The proposed music budget includes both growth in some of the existing categories, as well as a couple of new items with the potential to broaden the scope of our music program in the coming year.

As a part of supporting the music program, we ask that you support the entire budget as a part of this stewardship campaign. That proposed budget supports our Pastor, music director, and office manager, as well as building maintenance/repair and all church programs. The stewardship campaign is an essential and important part of planning for Alki UCC's new fiscal year.

I am the team lead; our members are: Pastor Emily, Daniel, Vicky, Bonita, Shannon, Sandy, Gary and Diane J. Again, please consider joining us.

Let's do this together!
— Joe M
Worship Logistics
Our Worship Logistics Team brings together the elements that support worship services. We mix high visibility with behind-the-scenes, efficient anonymity.

Our greeters welcome people as they arrive, handing out bulletins and making sure both members and visitors feel welcome and comfortable. We answer questions and sometimes offer to sit with first-time visitors (in the spirit of our beloved Ruth Okada). One of our team also sits at the back during service to watch for late-comers who may need assistance.

And there’s more! Before service starts, we set up the sign-in table at the back, displaying additional handouts, and make sure any new name tags are waiting for eager recipients. We deliver the prayer request list unobtrusively to the pastor during service.

On the creative end, we decorate the altar for holidays and special services (channeling Verona Ryan as much as possible); set up tables/props/candles/etc. when Pastor Emily plans a participation activity, including the labyrinth; and maintain supplies for these things, including remembering to order candles before we’re down to little stubs.

We also lower the banner to reveal the cross during holidays, and on any other Sunday when we have time to do it. Then we put it up again.

Finally, we welcome anyone who would like to help with our activities, whether regularly or occasionally. We’re not glamorous, but we are essential!

— Charlie H, Worship Logistics Team Leader
