Dear Alki UCC,
This Sunday we gather as a faith community to look back on the last fiscal year. When I consider these last months, what rises to the top of my mind is how we turned toward one another last November.
We were witnesses to one another’s anxiety in the days leading up to the election, the shock and dismay after seeing the results, and in the bracing for change that we knew was coming. Some of us gathered in the church parlor on election day to sing, pray, listen and reflect on sacred text, and light candles. Even more of us gathered on Zoom the day after the election to check in with each other. Many remarked that you “just needed to see each other’s faces.”
It has not been an easy year, Church. And yet, we have stuck together through it all. We’ve turned toward each other, not away. I think of the Bible Study sessions, meetings, coffee hour conversations and other gatherings where we took time to recount the day’s news, encouraging each other when despair was a viable option, and to instead seek the good that is ours to do.
The fears we had last November about the changes coming in our country have largely come to pass, and then some. One of you said to me lately, “I don’t recognize my country anymore.” And yet, you all continue to turn toward one another. You know that isolation can lead to cynicism and complacency.
Compassion grows in community. You are a compassionate people, Alki UCC. Let’s stick together, do the good that is ours to do, and celebrate having come this far by faith.
In hope,
Pastor Emily
