Alki UCC Weekly Messenger September 11, 2025
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

It was a joyous service last Sunday as we welcomed Rev. Phil Hodson to our church and into our pulpit! You can check out service highlights and Q&A linked here.

In the Q&A, Rev. Phil said that he challenges every one of the churches in our Conference to focus on three things: one in the Sanctuary, one in the neighborhood and one in the wider world.

Recognizing that we do much more than three things, he also reminds us of the importance of doing a few things really well. I want to lift up his words about ministry with the neighborhood. He said: “Pick one thing that says who you are and speaks to your community and engages in ministry with them. The days of us doing ministry for people are over. When you do ministry for someone, they ain’t never going to set foot in your church. Because that’s the place they came to get the thing they needed.

And there’s a presumption that they don’t want to know you and you don’t want to know them. And we can buck that all we want, but it’s not going to change. It never has. So do ministry with your community. Show up in your community. Be present in that way and proclaim who you are with them. Engage together.”

This is so important, because ministry is not about checking things off a list so that we can feel better about ourselves. Ministry is about relationships rooted in love. In all we do, let us keep that as our foundation. We will always be doing a lot of things, Alki UCC. But let's keep it all rooted in love, in relationships.

And let’s do a few things really well, so that we know who we are. We are not 31 flavors. We are Alki UCC!

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Fall Retreat Recommended Reading
We look forward to gathering with all who registered for our fall retreat at Pilgrim Firs from September 19-21.

In preparation for the Retreat and if you’re so inclined, Penny recommends beginning to read Inviting Silence: Universal Principles of Meditation by Gunilla Norris.

She notes: "It is a small book, easy to read and full of helpful guidance for anyone interested in learning about meditation and the practice of silence."
Cut/Paste Email TODAY to Seattle Mayor & Council to Pass Vital Tree Protection

Subject:  Pass tree protection Amendments 93 and 102

Dear Council Members and Mayor Harrell,

Thank you to all the council members who have shown a sincere interest in protecting Seattle’s urban tree canopy. In our experience, the amendments that will be most effective in accomplishing this goal are Amendments 93 and 102.

We therefore urge you to focus on passing these two amendments.
  • Amendment 93 – Neighborhood Residential Tree Canopy Requirements: Guarantees open ground on new lots and prevents nearly 95% lot coverage with hard surfaces. Without it, new trees may be planted in spaces too small to survive, and land will be paved over, accelerating tree loss. This amendment is especially important for frontline communities that rely on new plantings to achieve tree equity.

 • Amendment 102 – Alternate Site Plan Authority: Restores SDCI’s authority to require alternate site plans that incorporate trees and closes loopholes that allow complete tree removal. We urge that it be revised to also protect Tier 3 trees.

We urge you to act now to approve these amendments. At the current pace of tree removal (345 private property trees per month), delaying action by just six months could result in 2,000 additional trees lost, with negative impacts on public health and environmental justice. While these amendments are necessary, they are not sufficient: without reducing hardscape allowances, Seattle is on track to further increase urban heat islands, where we already rank 5th in the nation.

Sincerely,
Your name address email

The Detention Lottery
You're invited to this compelling, immersive theater experience.
Sunday, October 19 at 4:00

Seven detained. No questions answered.
Decisions rendered. Lives changed forever.
All in less than 60 minutes.

Margaret O'Donnell's The Detention Lottery takes us where family, friends and cameras cannot go: all-but-secret immigration detention courtrooms. We hear desperate conversations between attorneys and their clients, and life-and-death decisions made in a traffic court setting.

Detainees are “arrested” from the audience, their cases rapidly judged, and their fates sealed, in a system that subjects all within it to maximum stress.

Playwright and retired immigration attorney Margaret O’Donnell brings real-world expertise to this unflinching drama. Stay for a talkback afterward to extend your experience.
Used Car Donations Benefit Alki UCC!
CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services) is dedicated to helping non-profit organizations such as Alki UCC raise thousands of dollars in vehicle donations through successful car donation programs.

CarEasy.org is just what it says — easy. They handle everything from beginning to end of the donation process, including marketing, free pick-up, selling, mailing a thank you letter with tax information to the donor (you!) and most importantly, mailing a check to Alki UCC!

If you would like to donate your used vehicle (car, motorcycle, boat, plane or RV), avoid the hassle of a private sale and benefit Alki UCC in the process, go to CarEasy.org, enter Alki UCC in search under choose a non-profit, and get started! Or call CARS at 1.855.500.RIDE and they will do the rest!

A special shout-out to Diane J for getting this going. Questions: contact the church office.

Led by Pastor Emily and Rev. Penny, we meet from noon to 1:30 pm for spiritual practice, deep listening and wisdom-seeking.

Faith formation is what happens when we set aside our own agendas, individually and collectively, and show up for God. Our faith is formed when we listen to our own inner longing in response to God’s call in our hearts.

Join us for the journey!
