Alki UCC Weekly Messenger October 9, 2025
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

This Sunday in our Immigrant Stories series we lift up Hagar. As an enslaved woman who receives a blessing from God to ancestor a nation, she is a symbol of hope for oppressed people in all times and places. We will hear how she was seen and affirmed by God in the wilderness, not once but twice. She is the only person in Scripture to name God: You are El-roi, the God who sees.

Isn't that what we all long for? To be seen? And not only for ourselves, but we long for the suffering of the oppressed to be seen. For each person's particular humanity to be affirmed. And that is part of our work, Church, to open our eyes and see those who need to be seen. To love those who need to be loved.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Alki UCC Autumn Festival & Art Market
Coming Soon!
Saturday, October 25
10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Community Supper at 6:00 pm

The Autumn Festival and Art Market is less than two weeks away!

We have ten (10!) wonderful artists, and great plans for filling the inside of the church with bustling activities including a Bake Sale (see more at article to the right), Snacks, Children's Crafts and Storytimes, culminating with a community dinner.  Out front we'll have a morning coffee cart, courtesy of Creature Coffee Co., an afternoon Dippy's Ice Cream Truck, and an Autumnal scene for your selfies.

Now all we need are volunteers to staff all of these additional parts of our Autumn Festival. Please look at your schedule and availability and sign up for more than one time slot - even considering moving around to different activities if you like. There's something for everyone to help make our fundraiser a success. And remember that we will also be setting up and doing some cooking on Friday, as well as cleaning up after worship on Sunday.

Volunteer sign up sheets available after worship on Sunday.

Please RSVP for the $30 dinner, too.  RSVP here and invite your family and friends! Reservations can be accepted through Monday, October 20th. Sign up online, after worship, or by calling the church, 206-935-2661. It will be a joy to sit down together to celebrate our first annual event, and to not have to go home and figure out what to eat!

Hope to see you throughout the day!

With more than 30 years of teaching experience in the Pacific Northwest, instructor Diane Jacobsen shares her passion: “I am so excited to introduce dancers of all ages to the basics and beyond! No partners needed so everyone can go at their own pace!”

New students are welcome to join introductory sessions Sundays, September 21 through October. Classes begin at 1 pm.

No formal attendance fee, suggested freewill donation of $10 per class to Alki UCC.
The Detention Lottery
You're invited to this compelling, immersive theater experience.

Seven detained. No questions answered.
Decisions rendered. Lives changed forever.
All in less than 60 minutes.

Margaret O'Donnell's The Detention Lottery takes us where family, friends and cameras cannot go: all-but-secret immigration detention courtrooms. We hear desperate conversations between attorneys and their clients, and life-and-death decisions made in a traffic court setting.

Detainees are “arrested” from the audience, their cases rapidly judged, and their fates sealed, in a system that subjects all within it to maximum stress.

Playwright and retired immigration attorney Margaret O’Donnell brings real-world expertise to this unflinching drama. Stay for a talkback afterward to extend your experience.

In Our Circle of Prayer
Ever-present God, we give you thanks.
We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and our community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort the hearts of all who grieve and hold them close, especially all those who knew long-time church member Sylvia Jones, who passed away on Saturday, September 13 at 98 years of age.

We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
We pray for continued healing for Autumn, who had a heart transplant last week, Vicky S' friend Sue, Julia C's cousin Scott M, facing a critical health challenge; our Peruvian immigrant friends and for all who seek peace and safety in our country; for Sandy J's cousin Barbara; Dan K facing various health issues; Rev. Joan C; Cinda's mother Jackie S; Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene; Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise; and Nick L.

We pray for our wider world.
We pray for all the people and places in our world affected by war. We ask for wisdom for decision-makers and strength for justice-seekers. We pray for victims of violence, for refugees and asylum-seekers. We pray for all who are hungry, desperate, and in need of support.

In all of these things, we trust that you are with us. In all of these things, we ask for you to strengthen us. Help us to see you in those around us. Help us to love as you love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Join us via Zoom for our ongoing Tuesday Bible Study.

Led by Pastor Emily and Rev. Penny, we meet from noon to 1:30 pm for spiritual practice, deep listening and wisdom-seeking.

Faith formation is what happens when we set aside our own agendas, individually and collectively, and show up for God. Our faith is formed when we listen to our own inner longing in response to God’s call in our hearts.
