Dear Alki UCC,
Last Sunday we heard the story of Hagar and Ishmael who were cast into the wilderness, and I shared the names of just a few of the people our administration has currently stuck in immigration limbo (sermon linked here).
The United Church of Christ Office of Public Policy and Advocacy urges us to contact our members of Congress to ask them to support the NO BAN Act, to guarantee that the President cannot arbitrarily suspend refugee admissions and to prevent resettlement bans rooted in religious discrimination.
We must demand the resettlement program prioritize refugees who have been already processed, who have fled violence and harm in areas acknowledged on the world stage as marked by persecution and war. Make your voice heard here.
This Sunday we continue in our Immigrant Stories series with Abraham and Sarah’s great-grandchild, Joseph. Dream-interpreter and favored son of his father Jacob, Joseph was thrown into a pit by his jealous brothers, along with his coat of many colors. At the last moment they re-considered their murderous crime and pulled him out of the pit, selling him into slavery. This is where our reading this week picks up, with Joseph as a slave to the captain of Pharoah’s guard in an Egyptian palace.
In this strange new land, Joseph finds himself thrown into prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Detained with no due process. Sound familiar?
As justice-seekers, we must make our voices heard, that citizens and non-citizens alike be granted basic rights, including the right to a fair trial. Each person has a name, a story, a dream, and holy is each one. Let us affirm together that love knows no borders.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

You're invited to this compelling, immersive theater experience.
Sunday, October 19 at 4:00Westside Unitarian 7141 California Ave SW wsuu.org
Seven detained. No questions answered. Decisions rendered. Lives changed forever.
All in less than 60 minutes.
Margaret O'Donnell's The Detention Lottery takes us where family, friends and cameras cannot go: all-but-secret immigration detention courtrooms. We hear desperate conversations between attorneys and their clients, and life-and-death decisions made in a traffic court setting.
Detainees are “arrested” from the audience, their cases rapidly judged, and their fates sealed, in a system that subjects all within it to maximum stress.
Playwright and retired immigration attorney Margaret O’Donnell brings real-world expertise to this unflinching drama. Stay for a talkback afterward to extend your experience.

Ever-present God, we give you thanks. We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and our community of faith.
We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort the hearts of all who grieve and hold them close, especially all those who knew long-time church member Sylvia Jones, who passed away on Saturday, September 13 at 98 years of age.
We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
We pray for continued healing for Autumn, who had a recent heart transplant, Vicky S' friend Sue, Julia C's cousin Scott M, facing a critical health challenge; our Peruvian immigrant friends and for all who seek peace and safety in our country; for Sandy J's cousin Barbara; Dan K facing various health issues; Rev. Joan C; Cinda's mother Jackie S; Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene; Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise; and Nick L.
We pray for our wider world.
We pray for all the people and places in our world affected by war. We ask for wisdom for decision-makers and strength for justice-seekers. We pray for victims of violence, for refugees and asylum-seekers. We pray for all who are hungry, desperate, and in need of support. In all of these things, we trust that you are with us. In all of these things, we ask for you to strengthen us. Help us to see you in those around us. Help us to love as you love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Tuesday Bible Study at Noon
|
Join us via Zoom for our ongoing Tuesday Bible Study. Led by Pastor Emily and Rev. Penny, we meet from noon to 1:30 pm for spiritual practice, deep listening and wisdom-seeking. Faith formation is what happens when we set aside our own agendas, individually and collectively, and show up for God. Our faith is formed when we listen to our own inner longing in response to God’s call in our hearts.
Join us for the journey!
If you already registered, just use your same unique link to join us. OR sign up to attend here.
