Alki UCC Weekly Messenger October 23, 2025
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Last Sunday I quoted journalist Medhi Hasan who said, “Hope is not a mood. Hope is a method. Hope is a discipline. Hope is action. Hope is doing something about a situation that looks bad and needs changing.” (Sermon linked here)

We are witnessing a bad situation with how immigrants are being treated in our country. At the production of The Detention Lottery that some of us attended, we watched the dramatization of seven people in detention being brought before a judge, their fates sealed in moments.

At the Q & A following, three practicing immigration attorneys explained how drastically things have changed in the last 10 months. Greed is at the root, as detention centers are for-profit companies with a national goal of 3000 detentions per day, and shareholders get paid based on the number of filled beds. One of the attorneys remarked that their detained clients are nostalgic for federal prison, because detention is so bleak.

Detention is not new, but the sheer numbers of people being detained has soared. People who are of no threat to society. People who society needs.

So, where is hope? Hope is a method. Hope is what we decide to do. Will we protest? Will we write letters? Will we show up for our neighbors? Will we prayerfully consider what is the good that is ours to do? That is hope, and in that hope, God is always with us.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Mayflower Circle Bean Soup is Back
It took us almost a decade to get rolling again, but this past Monday a small gathering of us remained flexible and helpful packaging 48 jars of delicious Mayflower Circle Bean Soup.

It’s no coincidence that 2025 is the 70th anniversary of the Mayflower Circle and our timing and jars celebrate the legacy.

Perfect for your own fall comfort meal or gifting during the holiday home visits. Bowls of soup as well as pre-packaged soup jars will be for sale at the Autumn Festival this Saturday. Soup jars will be sold for $6 each.

We hope to see you Saturday as we bring back a tradition that was a part of Alki UCC for decades.

Tuesday Bible Study at Noon
Join us via Zoom for our ongoing Tuesday Bible Study.

Led by Pastor Emily and Rev. Penny, we meet from noon to 1:30 pm for spiritual practice, deep listening and wisdom-seeking.

Faith formation is what happens when we set aside our own agendas, individually and collectively, and show up for God. Our faith is formed when we listen to our own inner longing in response to God’s call in our hearts.

Join us for the journey!

If you already registered, just use your same unique link to join us. OR sign up to attend here.
