TREVY JAMES RELEASES NEW ALBUM: GREY IN THE BEARD - A REFINED AND MATURE SOUL-FORWARD VISION OF REGGAE
|
Trevy James returns this fall with his sophomore solo album, Grey In The Beard. A 9-track LP rooted in lovers rock, vintage R&B, and roots reggae, delivered with a harmonic and lyrical sophistication that positions him as one of the most distinctive new voices emerging from the American reggae landscape. Over the past year his singles have been championed by outlets including "CLASH" and "Earmilk", and now the full depth of this body of work arrives ready to speak directly to both reggae and R&B audiences.
CLICK HERE TO LISTEN ON MUSIC PLATFORM OF YOUR CHOICE
As a second-generation reggae musician who was truly raised inside the genre, Trevy’s career has been defined by steadily growing into his own expression of the music that shaped him. Grey In The Beard marks the culmination of an eight-year evolution, a defining moment where lived growth, craft, and lineage finally converge into a sound that is wholly his.
The album is a patient, elegant statement, and a true reflection of Trevy’s personal maturation alongside his real-life love story that recently culminated in marriage. Sonically, it draws from the harmonic warmth of lovers rock reggae and the groove-forward sophistication of vintage soul and yacht rock era 70s and 80s R&B, creating a genre-fluid body of work that feels timeless rather than trendy. In a contemporary musical era dominated by presets and digital convenience, Grey In The Beard leans almost entirely on live instrumentation; a choice that deepens the warmth and humanity at its core.
The album arrives following an impressive run of singles through 2024 and 2025: “Perfect Sense,” “If I Get a Chance,” “(Let Me Tell You ‘Bout) What I See,” and “Never Give In.” Each single showcased a different facet of Trevy’s evolving sonic identity, and they only become stronger as they finally find their rightful place within the full body of work.
Collectively, these pieces form a mosaic of grooves, emotional intelligence, nuanced chord progressions, and melodic depth that define a record made for listeners who value musicianship as much as mood. “This album is my most complete artistic statement to date. It took time to consolidate all of my different musical roles, influences, and visions into the style I was meant to create.
My 2018 EP and 2020 LP were about taking the reins of my own life within music and never giving up on my dreams." “Grey In The Beard” is me finally arriving at that long envisioned reality. It tells the story of not only this personal growth, but also the full growth of my relationship with my wife, from a hypothetical dream I used to journal about to the wedding day. I am so proud of this album and I am thrilled to finally share it with the world.
Grey In the Beard is available on all digital platforms November 14th www.trevyjames.com

Winston Riley: The Architect of Jamaican Rhythm From Rocksteady to Dancehall — The Visionary Producer Behind Decades of Jamaican Musical Evolution
Few figures in Jamaican music have shaped as many eras, artists, and sounds as Winston Riley. From the early days of ska and rocksteady to the explosion of reggae and dancehall, Riley’s fingerprints are everywhere as a singer, producer, label owner, and visionary. His legacy is one of constant reinvention, bridging generations through rhythm and melody.
Winston Delano Riley was born on May 14, 1943, in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1962, at the dawn of independence, he founded the vocal group The Techniques alongside Slim Smith, Franklyn White, and Frederick Waite. The group became one of Jamaica’s defining rocksteady acts, releasing classics such as You Don’t Care, Queen Majesty, and Love Is Not a Gamble.
While many lineups came and went, Riley remained the steady heartbeat of the group, ensuring The Techniques’ sound evolved from ska into the smoother rhythms of rocksteady and early reggae. His early years as a singer taught him the essentials of melody, harmony, and arrangement, skills that would later shape his production style.
From Singer to Producer By the late 1960s, Riley turned his attention from performing to producing. Using money borrowed from his mother, he founded the Techniques label in 1968, a move that gave him creative control and independence at a time when few artists owned their masters.
Operating out of Kingston, Riley began producing some of the finest singers of the era, including Johnny Osbourne, Alton Ellis, Hortense Ellis, and The Viceroys. His studio and record shop on Orange Street — the famous “Beat Street” of Kingston — became a hub of musical activity, nurturing young talent and pushing the sound of Jamaica forward.
Production Style and Vision Winston Riley’s success wasn’t just luck; it was strategy and instinct. He understood the power of rhythm. By crafting strong riddims (instrumental backings), he allowed endless reinterpretations, turning one groove into dozens of hits. He also believed in flexibility. From rocksteady harmonies to digital dancehall, Riley adapted to every new wave of sound without losing his identity.
He was one of the few producers who bridged: Rocksteady to Reggae — through The Techniques’ melodic sensibility. Roots to Dancehall — through his mastery of riddims and production.Vinyl to Digital — maintaining relevance well into the 1990s.
Later Years and Tragic End In November 2011, Riley was shot outside his home in Kingston. He fell into a coma and tragically passed away on January 19, 2012. His death shocked the Jamaican music community, but his influence lives on in nearly every corner of reggae and dancehall.
Legacy and Influence Winston Riley’s story is one of relentless creativity and independence. He wasn’t content to follow trends - he built them. He turned grooves into movements and songs into anthems. His riddims continue to inspire new generations of producers, DJs, and remixers worldwide.

Greetings, my name is Baba Ross-Walcott.
Hurricane Melissa recently ravaged the island nation of Jamaica. We are raising funds to help farmers in the western part of Jamaica that were affected by the devastation. As a farmer, myself, I understand how critical it is when you lose your livelihood. I lived through Hurricane Gilbert 37 years ago with my wife Mharia, who was pregnant with our daughter. I experienced great loss myself at that time.
In March of this year, I visited the western region and have a fresh memory of my beautiful island country and the resilient people who are sustaining the local food system. From the breadfruit and coconut trees, plantain and banana and all varieties of fruit trees to the ground crops of yellow yam, cassava and every kind of vegetable– people need fresh food to sustain themselves!
We will focus this support for four established farmers in the parish of Hanover, with tools and amendments, water lines and seeds to anchor the land for sustainable food production in the coming weeks and years.
Please help support this great cause by donating to our GoFundMe.
It will support the small farmers to restore the land and feed the people of this great country.
Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness.
One Love! Jamaica Rise!
Editor's note: RFG are personal friends with Baba Ross-Walcott and support this gofundme effort wholeheartedly.
