Dear Alki UCC,
This coming Monday, January 19, is Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We need his prophetic words more than ever:
“True peace is not merely the absence of tension. It is the presence of justice.”
We long for justice for the people of Minneapolis. Our hope is not for an absence of tension, for we need the tension. We need the protest.
We need justice.
When Renee Nicole Good showed up for her community at 34th and Portland, she showed up as a presence of justice. She exuded lovingkindness. She was a mother and wife. She was a Presbyterian, deeply involved in the life of the church. Like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., she was killed despite her own commitment to nonviolence. God, have mercy.
This Sunday we consider, who are the prophets today? Who is carrying on MLK’s legacy? Perhaps it is ordinary people who show up for their community. Whose words as simple as Renee’s last: “I’m not mad at you,” become the heartbeat of a movement.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Alki UCC Seedlings to be Planted
Monday, January 19 Join the Planting Party!
|
What happened to our 200 cedar and Douglas fir seedlings that we planted and nurtured for two years through Seattle's Grow It Forward habitat restoration initiative? As of Monday, January 19, their new residence will be at Cooper Crest Preserve in Olympia, WA. Lowell P's son-in-law, Gabe, is an officer in Olympia Ecosystems, an organization charged with restoring forests and wetlands that Lowell and I have supported over the years. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., they will be holding a planting party at Cooper Crest next Monday, January 19. Planting will be focused around a 1-acre area at the top of the hill, an area that has been closed for three years while work on controlling an infestation of Japanese knotweed, an invasive special.
You're invited to join the planting team! Monday January 19 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Cooper Crest Preserve (2922 29th Ave NW, Olympia, WA) • Please park on 20th Ave NW
or in the parking lot at Marshall Middle School. • Dress for the weather and bring gloves. • We will provide tools, snacks, coffee and tea!
Huge thanks to all of you who planted, tended, weeded, watered and enjoyed the 200 trees in our micro-nursery growing in the front church garden since 2023. It was a very rewarding project. A shout-out to Julia C's granddaughter who a couple of years ago asked: "How can we get more trees on earth?" This is one way! Shall we do it again? Spring is coming! :)
Thank you to Julia C for her follow-up to make sure that these trees have this new place to grow. — Emily H

Merciful God, we give you thanks. We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.
We pray for all those who grieve.
May they find strength and peace.
We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We pray for Ruth B who is recovering after a serious health event on her 96th birthday.
We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.
In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
