Roots & Reason - A Living Roots Reggae Listening Series by Link&Chain Music
- January–May 2026
Roots & Reason is a curated roots reggae listening series from Link&Chain Music, created to honor the cultural foundation of reggae as living music—carrying memory, meaning, and responsibility forward.
Rather than positioning these recordings as nostalgia, Roots & Reason invites listeners into a slower, more intentional experience. The series focuses on early Link&Chain recordings, released with care and context, allowing the music to speak for itself—unrushed, unpolished, and grounded in purpose.
Each release centers on themes that have always been central to roots reggae: identity, self-awareness, community, responsibility, and continuity. Songs like “African Man,” “Improve Yourself,” and “Bring the Family Back” are presented not as statements of the past, but as conversations that remain relevant today.

Reggae Veterans 10 Ft. Ganja Plant Announce Boston Benefit Concert to aid in rebuilding homes in Jamaica
TICKETS
Boston-based reggae and dub outfit 10 Ft. Ganja Plant is proud to announce a special benefit concert on Tuesday, February 10th at The Sinclair in Cambridge.
The evening will feature performances by local favorites: Flying Vipers..and a very special guest to be revealed on Feb 1st. After 25 years of creating music fueled by the spirit of the Island and culture, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant is stepping up to provide direct relief to families devastated by the recent impact of Hurricane Melissa. Unlike broad relief efforts, this initiative focuses on providing immediate, tangible support to specific members of the Jamaican community.
Direct Action: "Ground Work" for Families in Need - All proceeds from ticket sales and merchandise will go directly toward the rebuilding efforts for two specific families whose homes were completely destroyed: Monzar Grant (Westmoreland): A mother and grandmother who was forced to flee her home with her two children and grandchild.
David Lynch (Hanover): A local fisherman in the Sandy Bay district who lost his home and all personal belongings to the storm.
To ensure 100% of the funds reach these families without administrative delays, the band has partnered with Delroy Gray, a trusted colleague with deep community ties, to lead a "boots on the ground" initiative. "We know it’s a long way back for these families," says Craig Welsch, drummer for 10 Ft. Ganja Plant.
"There are a lot of large organizations helping, but we wanted to give back directly to a country that has been our primary source of musical inspiration—a country whose music and culture has inspired so many people all over the world."
Food and Necessity Drive In addition to the musical performances, the event will host an on-site donation drive. The band’s goal is to fill two full shipping barrels to be sent directly to the affected districts. Attendees are encouraged to bring: Non-perishable food items - School supplies - Small household essentials (items suitable for shipping barrels)
Event Details What: 10 Ft. Ganja Plant Benefit Concert for Jamaica Relief When: February 10th Where: The Sinclair, 52 Church St, Cambridge, MA 02138 Tickets: Available at (Insert Ticket Link/Box Office Info) Purpose: 100% of proceeds go to the families of David Lynch and Monzar Grant.
About 10 Ft. Ganja Plant: For over two decades, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant has been a cornerstone of the New England reggae scene. Known for their vintage dub sound and deep roots aesthetic, the band has consistently used their platform to honor the traditions and people of Jamaica.

RFG reasons with Trevy James
|
Q: Your new album Grey In The Beard feels deeply intentional and very personal. What moment in your life made it clear that this was the record you needed to make, and what story does it tell as a whole?
A: I spent the bulk of 2020-2024 extremely focused on my R&B/hip-hop band at the time, Heaping Teaspoon, where my writing had to shift to reflect the sonic and thematic goals of the collective. As that band began to fade, I decided to pivot and return to solo work so that I could begin to express a lot of the internal struggles I faced during that period. But while I was in the writing process, I met and grew my relationship with my now wife and was able to chronicle the entirety of that journey from meeting to marriage, which became the central theme of the album.
Q: Sonically, the album moves through lovers rock, roots, vintage soul, and even yacht rock-era R&B in a way that feels cohesive rather than experimental. How did you arrive at this blend, and what guided your decisions when shaping the sound of the record?
A: It really comes from a lifetime of listening to and loving a wide palette of music, much of it rooted in earlier decades. When I’m composing, my ear naturally makes choices informed by all of those influences. Whether that’s putting a one drop over sustained minor-seven chords on the Rhodes or writing a synth solo that sounds like it’s right out of the TOTO playbook, I always love finding ways to incorporate new approaches to how reggae can be expressed.
Q: As an American artist, what was your early connection to reggae, and how did that relationship evolve into the music you’re making today?
A: I’ve been surrounded by reggae literally since day 1. My real name is Trevy, named after the late, great Trevy Felix of Boom Shaka. My dad then laid the foundation for me during my childhood, playing keyboards for bands like Mystic Revealers, Pau Hana, and BloodFiyah Angels, giving me a front row seat to great roots and Rastafari music in the process. While my early creative work leaned more toward hip-hop, as I got older, my reggae background naturally took over, especially after my namesake tragically passed away in 2015. From that point on, my intention became clear: to continue contributing to, and helping carry forward, the legacy attached to our name within reggae music.
Q: The musicianship on Grey In The Beard feels central to the album’s identity. How important was working with live players in shaping the feel of the record, and what did that collaborative process bring out in the music?
A: I’m a player of instrument first and foremost. And to me, reggae is a genre that is at its best with live instruments. I was also really inspired by the sound of some of my favorite albums from back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, like Third World’s You’ve Got The Power, The Doobie Brothers’ Minute By Minute, and Sade’s Promise. I’m fortunate to have the extremely talented Tim Pacheco from Psydecar as my bandmate and primary writing partner. He played drums across the entire album and doubled on trumpet, while I handled the keyboards and doubled on saxophone and bass. Recording the album with this philosophy and small, tight knit team brought the tunes to life in a much deeper way than digital production could have. That human feel, the subtle groove shifts, expressive solo sections, it all gave unique life to the album.
Q: For listeners discovering Grey In The Beard for the first time, what do you hope lingers after the final track, and how do you see this album living within the broader reggae conversation over time?
A: I hope that the expressions of genuine, lifelong love on this album can be cherished and bring positive vibes to other couples and romantics around the world. As far as the broader reggae conversation goes, I see Grey In The Beard as an intentional expansion. Reggae is, to me, one of the most powerful musical expressions in existence, but parts of the contemporary scene, especially in my home country, I feel can sometimes settle into familiar patterns. My goal is to contribute a body of work that honors reggae’s roots while pushing for greater musical and emotional range that I hope reggae fans will find refreshing.
