Dear Alki UCC,
I have the pleasure of introducing to you Rev. Bill Maury-Holmes this Sunday in worship.
This year’s Annual Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Church of Christ in Southcenter wraps up on Saturday night, and participants are invited to attend area churches, of which we are one!
My colleague and friend Bill reached out to let me know he would like to be our guest and would be happy to have a role, and so I invited him to offer a dialogue sermon with me. In the sermon, Bill and I will engage in conversation about new church starts in our Conference and why they are important. It’s something he and I talk about a lot, he as a church planter and me as the co-chair of the Church Development Committee of our Conference.
And wouldn’t you know, it fits the Lent sub-theme! New churches are often centered around the protection and care for the vulnerable. We hope you will join us this Sunday!
In hope,
Pastor Emily
About Our Guest:
Bill Maury-Holmes is pastor and teacher of Follow The Star UCC, a new church start in Anchorage, as well as serving as interim pastor (for a little while longer) with the Alaska Native Lutheran Church ELCA.
In his previous professional life he also taught in the departments of Religious Studies and Business at the University of Redlands where his most notorious class was “Punk Rock DIY: Do It Yourself for Personal and Social Change.” He will happily call Mr. Epp and the Calculations as ground zero for the harder music scene that emerged in the Seattle area in the mid-1980s (notwithstanding the earlier Sonics in Tacoma).
He and his wife Marybeth live and work in Anchorage and play all over the Great Land. They are the grateful parents of three adult children, Samuel, Joel and Claire.

PNCUCC Annual Meeting This Weekend
|
This weekend's annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Church of Christ is this weekend in Southcenter; learn more about it here. Our Alki UCC delegates this year — Shannon P, Julia C and Vicky S — will be representing you as we discuss and vote on completely redone bylaws, the 2026-2027 budget and more. Pastor Emily will present Embody the Story, a workshop that integrates movement with the annual meeting Scripture theme "Come and See" (John 1:30), as well as convene a discussion with new church start leaders in her role as co-chair of our Conference's Church Development Committee. All of us are looking forward to hearing our keynote speaker, author and Michigan Conference Minister, Rev. Dr. Lillian Daniel. Worship services — scheduled for Friday, March 13 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, March 14 at 9:30 am & 4:00 pm — are accessible to all on the Conference's YouTube channel linked here.

Alki UCC Outreach Ministry Team
Lenten Good News Corner
|
Good News for our Beloved Planet ...
... from Near
Our own Outreach Ministry Team is reprising a project very close to our hearts with the pending acquisition of 100 fresh tree seedlings from Grow it Forward, a new group of gardeners in the greater Seattle area who grow valuable native tree and shrub seedlings for habitat restoration organizations to use to restore critical habitats.
Per the Grow It Forward mission, the young plants will be repotted and in a year be transplanted to help restore vital creeks and bolster salmon habitat/health.
This is our fourth season of hosting a micro garden on church grounds. Stay tuned for more information, including the date for a planting party after Easter.
All are welcome to help get our seedlings into their happy places in our front garden, where they will be for the next year!
... and Far
Thanks to a crackdown on illegal land clearing, Brazil has seen a record drop this year in Amazon deforestation.
Given the push to clear the Amazon for illegal farming and illicit mining operations, many of us have worried about the precious forest's rapid decline. (Note: a lot of the land is cleared to produce palm oil — check your label ingredients and never purchase products with palm oil!).
Brazil tracks yearly deforestation on an August to July annual schedule. Official satellite date recorded that, through the end of January 2026, only 516 square miles of forest had been cleared — the lowest figure for this period since 2024. This is good news indeed for all of us fighting dire effects of climate change. May it hold!
The recent drop in deforestation is putting a sizable dent in Brazil’s emissions, which last year dropped by the biggest margin since 2009. To protect the Amazon and fight warming, Brazil is aiming for net zero deforestation by the end of this decade.
