Community-Based Community of Practice:
Conscious Discipline and Social and Emotional Learning
|
We are navigating complex challenges and it's easy to feel like you're doing it alone. But you're not. Imagine a space where we come together to share insights, build skills, and support one another through the lens of Conscious Discipline and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). That’s the heart of our Community-Based Community of Practice (CoP).
Research shows that when we feel connected and supported, our resilience grows. Shared experiences and learning in a trusted group not only reduces stress but also strengthens our confidence and capacity.
This CoP is a place to grow, reflect, and co-create change. Together, we’ll explore practical tools and compassionate strategies that build a culture of safety, belonging, and connection for the adults and children in our communities.
For: Educators, paras, and other staff from community- or family-serving organizations in Coos, upper Grafton, or upper Carroll who have participated in Conscious Discipline's Building Resilient Homes & Schools or other multi-session CD training.
Cost: Free
Dates: Third Thursday of the month. Join on months that work for you.
Time: Online from 6:30-7:30 PM

$5,000 Brodsky Prize for High School Journalism
|
 The $5,000 Brodsky Prize is awarded annually to honor New Hampshire high school students who demonstrate exceptional journalistic initiative, innovation, and independent thinking.
Applications are open to students attending New Hampshire public, charter, or parochial high schools, including students who live in neighboring states but attend a New Hampshire school. The Prize honors the legacy of Jeffrey Brodsky, who began his journalism career at Manchester Central High School, and encourages students to pursue bold, thoughtful reporting.

Coming in May: NH Historical Society Workshops
|
NCES will be hosting two afternoon workshops in May being led by the New Hampshire Historical Society. One session will be on early American history (1600 to 1868) and the other on modern American history (1865 to 2001). Dates to be announced. Each workshop will be 2.5 hours.
Also, please note that the New Hampshire Historical Society will be offering the workshops at its headquarters in Concord on June 25 (NH History 1) and June 26 (NH History 2).

NH High School Short Film Festival - Share Your Story
|
For decades, the New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival has sparked imagination and self-expression among NH youth, celebrating their work at the state’s largest high school film event. This year, the festival is excited to expand that vision to also include the Spotlight Community Impact Awards, in partnership with Media Power Youth. Students can submit a short film or a photo/essay combination that shines a light on the people and activities in our schools that are making an impact. Come be part of a community event that celebrates creativity, connection, and inspiration. All short films, photos, and essays must be submitted by April 19th.

Youth Workshop:
Climate-Ready Jobs in the North Country
|
Celebrate Earth Month with a workshop for high schoolers and college students at the Appalachian Mountain Club Highland Center in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The day will bring together students from across the White Mountains region for hands-on workshop sessions to explore careers in the sciences, trades, arts, and more. This event is free, and lunch will be provided.
Hands-on sessions will be led by AMC scientists, policy experts, educators, and lodging staff, focusing on weather, ecology, advocacy, education, and sustainable operations. Partner-led workshops will further engage students in the White Mountains, fostering hope, joy, and momentum for climate action.
School counselors and teacher leaders are invited to register now if they are interested in bringing a school group (4-5 or more students), or contact Jen Natyzak at jnatyzak@outdoors.org for more information.

What is the New Hampshire Science and Engineering Expo (NHSEE)?
The NHSEE is the New Hampshire state science fair, held each year at NHTI – Concord’s Community College in Concord, NH. Judges from business, state and local organizations, universities, and schools volunteer their time to bring authenticity to the assessment of the students’ work and research.
All projects are eligible for various category awards and special awards, with the top high school projects being invited to attend the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), and top middle school projects being nominated to the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC).

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the New Hampshire Secretary of State is asking NH teachers, community members, or peers to nominate NH public, nonpublic, or homeschool students in grades K-12 who have applied foundational civic knowledge to a civic engagement activity that enhances the lives of others.

School-to-Farm Days for Fourth Graders
|
This event brings together 4th grade students from different elementary schools throughout the county for a day of learning about the importance of agriculture. Farmers and other professionals are on hand to present mini-lessons and demonstrations on topics such as beekeeping, sheep raising, wool carding and spinning, dairy cows, oxen, maple sugaring, vegetable production, soil ecology, chickens and more. Students visit the stations, meet the experts, see the animals and experience a taste of farm life.
Cost: $6 per student, chaperones are free.

Heartwood Public Charter School utilizes a place-based education model, providing opportunities for our students to build valuable relationships within their community through service, experiential learning, and an integrated curriculum. Students attend grades K-8 and come from towns across the region. Heartwood operates on a four-day week for students (Monday-Thursday) with Fridays dedicated to collaborative and independent planning, professional development, and other related tasks.

In addition to providing bereavement support services and resources to children and families who have suffered the death of a loved one, he Friends of Aine Center for Grieving Children and Families recognizes the importance of working with and educating our community about grief, what it looks like in children and teens, and how to best support those grieving. They offer resources, workshops, trainings, and consultations that include curriculum development for community workers, school staff, and students that provide essential information about acknowledging grief, making space for it, and offering concrete help.
