Alki UCC Weekly Messenger March 26, 2026
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Palm Sunday was a protest.

When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, he did so as a community organizer. When crowds waved palm branches and laid down their cloaks, they were not just going with the flow. They were joining a public expression of dissent, an organized gathering to resist those at the top of the social order.

Many of us will be heeding the call of community organizers this Saturday, whether downtown or at the Alaska Junction. We’ll gather with crowds to raise signs of resistance, chant dissent and look out for one another. To remind ourselves that we are not alone in our distress about the state of our country. To collectively resist. To know that grassroots movements really do create change.

And on Sunday, we march again — a short walk on Hinds St to 63rd and back again. We’ll sing. We’ll raise signs and branches. Because every Palm Sunday we re-enact the first as an expression of worship.

But also because we follow a community organizer. We follow one who invites us to resist all that is not right in the world. We follow one who calls us to put love first.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Alki UCC OPOP Team:
Maintaining relationship as the journey expands

Rihan and our One Parish, One Prisoner (OPOP) team are making progress in learning how to navigate relationships within the prison system.

A recent meeting centered on how money can hurt or help a relationship, and in the bigger picture, how we can support each other best by walking beside each other rather than taking on each other’s burdens and responsibilities.

With that in mind, our letters with Rihan have made us rethink how we communicate and understand ourselves. We’ve discussed how we want to show our support to Rihan now and when she’s released, and how we are relating with her as she works through prison’s many hurdles. We are also thinking about how to get the community involved to support Rihan when the time is right!  — Emily D

About Rihan (pronounced Ryan)
She is 34 years old, has children, and will likely settle in the Auburn area upon release.

Her goals include working to finish her Associate in Arts & Sciences degree; she is currently taking chemistry, one of three natural science classes she still needs. She asks for our prayers ,,, chemistry is hard! —Your Alki UCC Outreach Team

In Our Circle of Prayer
Sandy J would like you to know that longtime member, Ned C, recently wrote from his winter home in Snowmass to send his greetings to the congregation. He hopes to see you when he returns to Seattle with the advent of more reasonable weather! He reports that, ironically, Snowmass has had no snow this year!

Merciful God, we give you thanks.
We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve.
May they find strength and peace.

We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We lift them up to your loving care.

We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.

In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
