Alki UCC Weekly Messenger April 2, 2026
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Today is Maundy Thursday. Maundy is the Latin word for command or mandate. On this day, we are invited to remember Jesus’ instruction to his disciples for them to love one another as he loved them. On this day of Holy Week, as we wade ever closer to the mystery of resurrection, we pause and wonder at this teaching of Jesus.

We will meet this evening in the parlor at 6:00 pm for a meal of soup and bread, readings, songs and birdsong (aka flute music by Daniel). We will celebrate handwashing and Holy Communion by serving each other at the table. Our theme is Towel and Birdsong. The towel is a symbol of service, and birdsong a reminder to listen for God’s love.

If you can’t make it to our service, I invite you to have a mindful meal on your own this evening. A Maundy Thursday meal is simple. No elaborate planning or standing for hours over a stove required. You may wish to set the table and light a candle.

If you often eat in front of the TV or on the go, it might feel unusual to eat in the quiet with nothing else happening! What do you notice? Consider what it might have felt like to be in the room at the last supper that Jesus had with his disciples before he died, and his teaching to love one another as we have been loved by God. What do you wonder about? How do you respond?

We follow in the footsteps of Jesus, from the meal to remember to the shadows of Good Friday. We must move through the darkness to reach the dawn. Blessings to you on this most Holy Week.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

All ages are invited — youngsters to elders! As a participant in Grow It Forward's regional tree restoration project, Alki UCC friends and neighbors are hosting a planting party to settle 100 Douglas Fir seedlings into their new temporary home in the church micro-nursery. The young trees will be tended on-site for two years before being transplanted to regional river habitat restoration projects.

Bring gloves and trowels if you have them; trees, soil and pots provided. Rain or shine, stop on by, plant a few or a lot! See Julia C and Aly for details

Lenten Good News Corner
The Good News is ... inspiring us to act
Community of Christ, look past the church's door

More than 20 folks from our church community participated in the third No Kings protest, joining more than 100,000 throughout the Seattle area. Pastor Emily preached a strong sermon (linked here) the following day on Palm Sunday.

One of the hymns we sang in worship beautifully captures this week's Lenten message: The Good News is...inspiring us to act!

The selection, Community of Christ by Shirley Erena Murray, is on page 314 in The New Century Hymnal. Here's an excerpt:

"Community of Christ, look past the church's door
and see the refugee, the hungry, and the poor.
Take hands with the oppressed, the jobless in your street,
Take towel and water, that you wash your neighbor's feet."

Joan S, one of Julia C's friends and a volunteer at WIN's Saturday Welcome Table, provides this perspective:

"This is such an important time! With so much to keep track of I've been listening to and supporting a lot of progressive Substack folks to help me understand our shared history and connect the dots circling the globe. I want to know what feeds our roots, trunk, branches, twigs.

It's an ugly time in many respects, but exciting to see how strong, resolved, and united we are as more is revealed. I have faith we'll eventually act on a new vision of ourselves with new respect.
Meanwhile, it's important to do what moves us, to breathe, take care of ourselves and each other, and ground! That's my take. Love, Joan"

This wraps up our six-week Lenten Outreach Team's Good News stories for the Alki UCC newsletter. We hope you have felt pride in all that our Church Family (that's YOU!) are doing for peace and social justice in West Seattle and beyond.
