Dear Alki UCC, Last Sunday we explored the post-resurrection story of Jesus passing through a locked door to breathe peace on his disciples as they huddled together in fear.
Jesus knocked down the door of fear, entered in, bringing peace to a group of unrested souls, breathing the Spirit of God on them, empowering them to follow where God was leading. You can listen to my sermon, based on John 20:19-31 ( linked here). As you consider this story, I invite you to connect to your breathing and let this poem from Jan Richardson wash over you:
Blessing of Breathing
That the first breath
will come without fear.
That the second breath
will come without pain.
The third breath:
that it will come without despair.
And the fourth,
without anxiety.
That the fifth breath
will come with no bitterness.
That the sixth breath
will come for joy.
Breath seven:
that it will come for love.
May the eighth breath
come for freedom.
And the ninth,
for delight.
When the tenth breath comes,
may it be for us
to breathe together,
and the next,
and the next,
until our breathing
is as one,
until our breathing
is no more.

Merciful God, we give you thanks. We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.
We pray for all those who grieve. May they find strength and peace.
Prayers of Condolence and Comfort to the family and friends of beloved long-time member Ruth Bell, who passed peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 5.
Ruth's daughter, Sandy, sends the following notice about Ruth's Celebration of Life in Seattle on Saturday, June 20:
Dear friends at Alki UCC,
Ruth Bell's Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 20, 2026, 2:00-4:00 pm at Seaview Terrace in the community building overlooking the pool.
It will be a casual gathering with appetizers and pastries. We will celebrate who she was and what she meant to each of us.
Please dress for a cheerful garden party to celebrate Ruth.
Seaview Terrace 7019 47th Ave SW Seattle, WA
We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We lift them up to your loving care.
We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.
In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
