Dear Alki UCC,
Pentecost is the BEST! 50 days after Easter, we gather to tell the story of the Holy Spirit swooshing into the gathered assembly as a rushing wind, descending on each one as tongues of fire. We wear red and wave streamers in the air. We hear the ancient words of Scripture, imagining the bewilderment and amazement of those hearing the good news of God’s love in their own languages.
The Spirit that day was absolutely inclusive and accessible. The Spirit always is.
Let our complacency be stirred, our rigidity disrupted, and our spirits enlivened by the Holy Spirit who blows through us like wind and fire.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Strengthen the Church
UCC Special Offering this Sunday
|
How can we follow the Spirit to bless emerging ministries in the United Church of Christ?
Through the Strengthen the Church offering you support the formation of new congregations and the renewal of existing ones, fund new programs for youth and young adults and sponsor leadership development for the whole church.
Strengthen the Church is one of five special mission offerings of the UCC. Conferences and the national setting equally share the gifts given by members and friends through their local congregations.
Here in the Pacific Northwest Conference, a Conference grant from Strengthen the Church provided funding for 10 Samoan pastors to receive training to become UCC ministers.
As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, spark ideas in existing churches, and nurture the spiritual life of our youth and young adults.
You can donate to Strengthen the Church this Sunday at worship, or online any time via this dedicated link OR the QR code at right.
Please give generously to Strengthen the Church this Sunday, May 24, as we celebrate Pentecost!

Stewardship Season Underway!
Abundance Grows Where We Give
|
As we continue through this season of gratitude and commitment, while engaging our counterweights, we invite you to participate in a series of meaningful stewardship events at Alki UCC.
This is a time to reflect on how we each contribute to the life of our church—through our time, talents, and treasures—and to celebrate all that God is doing through our community.
On May 24 (Pentecost & Memorial Day Sunday) with the Strengthen the Church special offering, part of our 5 for 5 commitments, supporting the wider mission of the United Church of Christ.
On May 31, after our budget review for the coming year, pledge campaign materials will be available for pickup, or mailed on June 1 for those not present in worship.
Join us on June 7 for a Ministry Teams Fair & Open House—a wonderful opportunity to learn about the many ways you can share your gifts and get involved in the life of your church.
Then on June 14, we gather for Pledge/Commitment Sunday, when we prayerfully offer our commitments of time, talent, and treasures for the coming year.
We’ll close the season on a joyful note with a Stewardship Raffle on June 21, featuring some fun prizes—stay tuned for details on how to participate!
Together, let us celebrate the spirit of generosity that strengthens our community and empowers our mission. We hope you’ll take part in this meaningful journey together!

"One Parish, One Prisoner" (OPOP)
Update
|
Our incarcerated friend, Rihan, is preparing to transition into a graduated reentry (GRE) program this summer. This means that Rihan will move into transitional housing in King County, and work within the community for the last six months to a year before full release.
Now that we’ve jumped over the hurtles of establishing our first emails and video calls, our OPOP team is working with Rihan as they navigate the unknowns of this big next step. There’s a lot of excitement, and uncertainty!
We plan to build a fund to support Rihan by removing a few barriers that may arise in the coming months. This might include interview clothing, helping with initial rent, applying for IDs, helping with modes of transportation, or more. Please keep an eye out for OPOP fundraising events in the near future!
Thanks!
— Emily D for the OPOP Team
From the OPOP website:
We seek to equip parishes—faith communities small or large, traditional or rag-tag—in every American town to build supportive pre-release relationships with just one person returning to their community from prison.
They build release plans together, “roll away the stones” of reentry barriers together, and discover that we belong to one another. We believe this could empty the prison system over time. And transform each community.

Calling All Cooks!
Alki UCC Hosts Welcome Table Lunch
This Saturday, May 23
|
Hello friends of The Welcome Table-
Along with our friends at Admiral UCC and the Westside UUs, Alki UCC is responsible for providing the Welcome Table hot meal this Saturday, May 23.
We need to plan to feed 150 people so lots of casseroles, deli chicken (and other main course protein), roasted veggies, fruit salad, and desserts- lots of desserts!
Hope you can contribute and/or join in the fun with serving the meal or passing out donations and our various tables.
And speaking of donations: our food pantry has been kinda sad lately. Along with a casserole could you bring a couple of cans of tuna, fruit, peanut butter, box of cereal, or whatever? That table feeds a lot of people and they've come to count on your donations.
We're always looking for men's outdoor work clothing, sturdy shoes and boots, socks socks and more socks.
Please LMK and thank you thank you thank you! — Cinda
We set up at 11:15 am and welcome folks in at noon. If you’re bringing desserts please bring by 11:45, food pantry donations can come anytime after 11:00 am — cereal, canned foods, tuna, peanut butter, bread, tortillas, boiled eggs, snacks, etc. All needed and all given away to our hungry neighbors!

Merciful God, we give you thanks. We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.
We pray for all those who grieve. May they find strength and peace.
We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We lift them up to your loving care.
We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.
In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Spring cleanup energy is alive and well
at Alki UCC.
Thanks to all who have taken the initiative to tend to areas that have needed tidying for far too long ... and are now spaces of organization and beauty, thanks to their new caregivers.
We have lots of spaces in the church
that could use organization
and regular attention.
Would you be willing to
adopt a space
at church to sort and tend?
Possibilities include the Lost & Found, kitchen, the closet next to the office level restroom, the storage room in Anderson Hall and the stage. Ask a friend or two to help or do it on your own and at your convenience.
Please contact Charlie or the church office and we will connect you with a space!
