Duluth, MN - The 20th Annual Bayfront Reggae & World Music Festival - Saturday, July 18th
|
Reggae Festival Guide caught up with Janna Dreher the longtime promoter of Bayfront Reggae & World Music Festival in Duluth, MN about the 20th anniversary of her festival.
Q: Tell us how you started a reggae and world music festival in Duluth, Minnesota
JD: I had been involved with a folk festival for about 20 years and loved bringing a world music vibe to the event. In 2004, a friend of mine who was from Trinidad and who was the first to bring Caribbean music to Minnesota, passed away. I started what was then called Bayfront Reggae Festival in 2006 to pay tribute to him and recognize him in our program. Every year since we have had an In Memoriam in our program to recognize the many talented world music artists who have passed. This is our 20th Annual event so we hope to have a special year.
Q: What is the festival's mission?
JD: To provide cultural entertainment through artists who spread the message of love, hope, and equality for all people worldwide. I just returned from Jamaica recently and was disappointed to find very little reggae music being played or performed around the island. Instead, I heard lots of music with themes of violence and sex and I wondered where the youth are getting their values from. I feel that this mission is more important than ever and that reggae music provides the cultural foundation to bring peace and harmony. We need the young conscious reggae artists to bring these messages forward the same way as their elders.
I am a reggae musician as well and am releasing an album of conscious reggae music this summer.
Q: Who has performed at the festival?
JD: We have had so many great artists that I can’t name them all, but our first annual event was held in 2006 with Culture, The Itals and The Meditations headlining. It was the last show that Joseph Hill performed in the US before he passed. Other notable acts include Alaine, Alison Hinds, Anthony B, Capelton, Ce’Cile, Christopher Martin, Frankie Paul, Kabaka Pyramid, Konshens, Ky-Mani Marley, Luciano, Mykal Rose, Morgan Heritage, Nkulee Dube, Queen Omega, Richie Spice, Sister Carol, Steel Pulse, Stonebwoy, Tarrus Riley, Third World, Timaya, and Romain Virgo. This year we are excited to have Protoje, Jesse Royal, Teejay, Libianca, Rik Jam and the International Reggae All Stars grace the stage.
Q: Tell us about the event.
JD: Not only do we have great performers, but we have many cultural food vendors who cook jerk chicken, curried, goat, fish, samosas and more right on sight. We have rum punch and Red Stripe beer for that island vibe for this tropical summer jam. And we have many artisans vending African and Caribbean clothing, jewelry and more. Bayfront Festival Park is located right by the waters of Lake Superior, the largest fresh water late in the world, so people love to come to the festival and enjoy their vacation in Duluth, Minnesota. Since we are located right in the middle of the USA, it serves as a unique boutique festival. The performers usually fly to the event since routing is more difficult.
Q: Tell us about your fans.
JD: We have about 2500-3000 people attend each year. We are very appreciative of the many fans who return each year to support the event. The African and Caribbean diasporas are well represented. People come from across the US to attend this event and bring a vibe of excitement and thankfulness to celebrate this diverse community event. The fans also support the Jamaica Minnesota Organization through a raffle where we raise funds to support education in Jamaica. I recently traveled to Jamaica to meet with the principal at a school and see what improvements have been made with the funds provided from the raffle. I was pleased to see a security wall was built, artwork was on the walls providing positive social emotional messages, various equipment was purchased for security and instruction, as well as teaching materials for the classroom.
Don't miss out on this unforgettable summer jam that will lift your spirits and bring people together from all walks of life.
Bayfront Festival Park is located right by Lake Superior and is the premier location for musical events. Visit our website at www.bayfrontworldmusic.com for updates on lineup, tickets, hotel accommodations, directions, and camping information.
