Nanaimo, Victoria, CA - Victoria Ska and Reggae Festival...and more...this weekend
|
VICTORIA SKA AND REGGAE FESTIVAL
Where: Ship Point, Victoria Curling Club, and more When: June 24-28 Tickets: Ticketweb.ca or Tourism Victoria Visitor Centre (812 Wharf St.), Fascinating Rhythm (Nanaimo), and Area 51 (Duncan)
The Victoria Ska and Reggae Festival drew the biggest crowds in festival history last year, with more than 5,500 tickets sold. That’s an impressive feat on multiple levels — the biggest one being the timing of the attendance record, which was set a quarter-century into the festival’s lifespan.
“It’s the tortoise-and-the-hare thing, slow and steady wins the race,” said Dane Roberts, co-founder and artistic director of the Victoria BC Ska & Reggae Society.
“We’ve always kind of favoured the long game over trying to look flashy and go for every artist. Some festivals book every available headliner that their fans would like, but then you’ve got nothing to dig for the next year. If you want to be around for a long time, you have to think about what you’re going to provide — not just the next year, but the next five years.”
The event known as Skafest enters its 27th year this week with programming at four venues, including free and ticketed performances at the Victoria Curling Club and Ship Point at the Inner Harbour. Santa Barbara, California, skate punks Lagwagon, Oakland, California, hip-hop collective Souls of Mischief, Jamaican dancehall singer Charly Black, New Zealand reggae-funk favourites The Black Seeds, and Toronto-bred reggae rockers Bedouin Soundclash are among the top draws.
That lineup of acts bears a resemblance to the 2025 roster, which drew big attendance numbers for sold-out performances by punk band Propagandhi, hip-hop act The Pharcyde, and ska-punks Jakob’s Castle. Roberts wasn’t wrong to offer something similar in 2026, with a proven stylistic mixture that also features Vancouver party-starters Five Alarm Funk, Seattle reggae legend Clinton Fearon, Mexican reggae act Antidoping, and Florida punk quartet Against All Authority.
“We love the roots of Jamaican-rooted music, but we can’t just do ska and reggae,” he said. “We don’t have the population that would support a festival only on those two genres, but there’s a lot of adjacent genres that can. We know that the combination of punk and hip-hop has worked the last couple of years, but that doesn’t mean we’re always going to do that. We’ve found a combination that works at the moment.”

HEARTBEAT OF THE RIVER – Reflections on Reggae on the River 2025 as We Move Towards This Year’s Festival August 14-16

HEARTBEAT OF THE RIVER – Reflections on Reggae on the River 2025 as We Move Towards This Year’s Festival August 14-16 - by Heather Rowbury
A first-person recap about the Mateel Community Center’s 36th annual festival, County Line Ranch (formerly Dimmick Ranch), Humboldt County, California — August 1–3, 2025. Heather is a behind-the-scenes active reggae lover for almost 30 years as an avid fan, artist liason, guest media check in, street teamer, and more. Heather shares her love of Reggae on the River with us.
The 37th annual Reggae on the River returns August 14–16, 2026 to County Line Ranch — a shift from the festival’s traditional first weekend ofAugust slot. Grammy-winning reggae legend Burning Spear headlines, closing out Saturday night, on a lineup that also includes Kabaka Pyramid, The Movement, Don Carlos, Dezarie, Jah9, Samory I, and many more. Tickets and full lineup at reggaeontheriver.com.
Last year, at the 36th Reggae on the River, there were at least four generations in the crowd, from babies to great-grandparents. Volunteers who started working the festival as teenagers are still working it as adults, some in the very same positions. People reminisced all weekend about the years they’d volunteered to support their local nonprofits, fire departments, and schools. At a time when so much of culture is branded, commercialized, and monetized, this remains an event put on by the community, for the community.
Known to locals simply as “Reggae,” it’s been a Mateel Community Center tradition since 1984. The 2025 festival was held August 1–3 at County Line Ranch (formerly Dimmick Ranch), across the Eel from the original French’s Camp site.

Friday
We crossed over the Mendocino–Humboldt County line around 4:20 p.m. on Friday, August 1st. We checked into camp, got out our radio, and tuned to KMUD 91.1, the listener-supported community station out of Redway. KMUD broadcasts ROTR live every year — over-the-air and streaming online — and their press tent coverage gives listeners an inside look into the artists’ lives and viewpoints… access that at most festivals is reserved for industry media and not broadcast in full to the public.
Keznamdi was on the main stage when we tuned in. As we cooked dinner at camp, the broadcast moved to KMUD’s press tent, where Mista Chief was being interviewed about his set that afternoon — one he defined as “electric.” One artist from the All Season collective said something that stayed with me: “We are being indigenous in the biggest spaces and we’re being really loud about it.” They spoke of their work in the hip-hop and indigenous communities, the idea of having actions behind the concepts. Luciano was starting on the main stage as we packed up for the shuttle.
We caught the shuttle into the festival as the sun was going down. The shuttle stops are one of the places you really feel the mix of who shows up to Reggae — long-time attendees and first-timers riding in together, sparking conversation. Talking with another couple, we reminisced about the prior years we had collectively attended — the changes and stand-out performances.
Arriving on-site, getting our wristbands, seeing familiar faces, and walking into the festival grounds had me giddy. We took our time to settle in, catching the last song from Yellowman, then Charly Black, who kicked off a weekend full of dancehall. Between sets we walked to the back of the bowl (main music area) and found an space a few of the event sponsors had set up as public lounges so people could sit down, be comfortable, and relax. Cozy couches, ottomans, coffee tables — the functional décor included full-length cannabis flowers on their stems in vases, plus rolling trays and papers — everything needed, and genuine Humboldt hospitality. I grabbed dinner from Spiro’s Gyros out of Ukiah. Spiro has had a booth at ROTR for 20 years, fundraising for Tree of Life Charter School since his kids were young.
Headlining Friday night was Alborosie, returning for the first time since 2015. During his set he told the crowd: “We gonna take it to another level. To the 4 corners of the earth. We love marijuana and we love Humboldt County. We love real people who grow weed and spread the message of the Solomon herb and the righteousness and the spiritualism that goes with the music. We don’t just smoke to smoke. We smoke to be deeper. Deeper like the ocean.” This would be a recurring theme of the festival — the power of cannabis not just to get high, but to go deeper: its spiritual properties, and the way it connects people to each other and to something greater.

Nassau County, NY and DubShot Records Present 2026 Long Island Reggae Festival Sunday, June 28th - East Meadow, NY - Inner Circle, Wayne Wonder, more...
Nassau County, NY partners with Reggae and Dancehall label DubShot Records 2026 Long Island Reggae Festival Sunday, June 28th - 7-10pm Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, NY
Listen to the Official Playlist HERE Nassau County in Long Island, NY has partnered with DubShot Records to host the Long Island Reggae Festival at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, NY with performances from ‘The Bad Boys of Reggae’ Inner Circle, Billboard chart topping dancehall hitmaker Wayne Wonder, and support from local favorites IRIEspect, hosted by Max Glazer with DJ sets from Federation Sound with special guest appearances. The FREE SHOW takes place Sunday, June 28th, 2026 Inner Circle, one of the iconic foundation artists in the reggae genre, are not slowing down in their 6th decade as a band, with a world tour and new releases planned for 2026. Founded in 1968 by brothers Ian and Roger Lewis alongside Bernard ‘Touter’ Harvey, the musical lineup of these hitmakers has included many of the top name musicians and singers in the genre. In the 1970’s the group came to international fame with lead singer Jacob ‘Killer’ Miller alongside fellow artists Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh at the legendary “One Love Peace Concert.” Following the tragic passing of Jacob Miller in 1980, the band took a hiatus and moved to Miami, Florida, and began rebuilding their career and launching the now famous Circlehouse Studios. Their reformation spawned new creativity and direction for the band, with a new lead singer, and a song called “Bad Boys” that caught the attention of a newly formed documentary television show on the FOX Network called simply “COPS.” The song became synonymous with the wildly successful series and launched the group into the stratosphere when their song “Sweat (a la la la la long)” hitting the top of the Billboard charts in 1993. The pop-culture cemented theme song has turned into a billion dollar movie franchise starring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, with the latest installment released in 2024, when “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” hit #1 and became a summer blockbuster. Last summer the song continued to permeate across the internet with the viral trending “Foot Pursuit Challenge” made popular by megainfluencers like Mr. Beast. In recent years the band has taken their success on stage and in the studio as an independent label Soundbwoy Entertainment, which partnered with DubShot Records upon its founding in 2008. Since then, the band has had a consistent release of ground breaking productions and have leveraged their catalog of hits, continuing to hit GOLD and PLATINUM status. In late 2025, when Jamaica was hit by the deadly hurricane Melissa, they answered the call along with the rest of the reggae industry to perform a monumental “Jamaica Strong” benefit show at UBS Arena in Elmont, NY. In addition to their charity performances, the legendary band penned and recorded a song to express the strength and resilience of the Jamaican people. "Stay Strong," has already become an anthem for Jamaica’s recovery since its release early in 2026. Wayne Wonder has been a legendary hitmaker in the dancehall reggae genre in the 1990s and 2000’s. Wayne built a strong reputation with a string of reggae and dancehall hits including “Joyride,” “Bashment Girl,” and “Keep Them Coming,” produced by the legendary Dave Kelly and Madhouse Records, distributed by DubShot Records. In 2002, Wayne released what would become one of reggae’s most iconic songs, the global smash hit “No Letting Go.” Powered by the legendary Diwali Riddim produced by Steve ‘Lenky’ Marsden, the single became an international crossover success and remains a staple in reggae and mainstream music culture today. The success of “No Letting Go” propelled Wayne’s Atlantic Records debut album, No Holding Back, into worldwide recognition. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, while the single climbed to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and dominated radio internationally. Wayne’s global breakthrough led to major accomplishments including a live performance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, multiple BMI Urban Awards, a MOBO Award in the UK, and extensive world tours across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean with his Singso Band. Additional crossover hits such as “Bounce Along” and his reggae rendition of “Hold Me Now,” featured on the 50 First Dates soundtrack, further cemented his international appeal. With decades of hits, sold-out performances, and an enduring influence on reggae and dancehall culture, he continues to captivate audiences worldwide with his smooth delivery, timeless music, and undeniable stage presence. IRIEspect is a 6-piece reggae/dub/jam/Latin outfit from Long Island, NY. With a very infectious & energetic live show, they showcase a versatile, dynamic, innovative & genre-bending sound fusing elements of roots/rock/reggae with live dub, Latin, hip hop, dancehall & more. Playing over 200+ shows in their home LI-NYC & surrounding markets up & down the East Coast, they've created big waves of buzz over the last few years, leaving their rabid live fans demanding more. In 2024, they dropped their first full length LP, featuring the local anthemic single “Strong Island.” The band generated a lot of buzz in recent years with high profile shows w/ Collie Buddz, the Original Wailers, and sold out New Year’s Eve shows w/ Steel Pulse at Brooklyn Bowl, NY. In 2025, they released their long awaited "Lost in Time EP" w/ special guest artists Ras Ajai and Skygrass on Dubshot Records. The follow up came in the spring of 2026 with the release of "Lost In Dub EP,” a reggae dub remix of the original songs from the original EP. Max Glazer is the Brooklyn based co-founder of New York City’s Federation Sound whose mission is to spread the sounds of dancehall, reggae and the Caribbean far and wide. Max helms two radio shows on New York’s 94.7FM The Block focused on Dancehall and Reggae. Federation Sound co-produced two songs on Chronixx’s Grammy-nominated 2017 debut album, Chronology. Max has produced for Vybz Kartel and a host of reggae superstars. As a DJ, Glazer has toured the world with Rihanna, Cham, Sean Paul and more, performing on some of the world’s most legendary stages - London’s Wembley Arena, Jamaica’s Sumfest, and NYC’s Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall. Max has also been tapped to executive produce several compilation albums directed at bringing Caribbean music to the masses. Beyond music, Max is a partner in the boutique hotel, Skylark Negril, and a hospitality consultant for Rockhouse Hotel and Miss Lily’s restaurants, and sits on the board of the Rockhouse Foundation, which is dedicated to transforming the places where Jamaica’s children learn and supporting the great people who teach them. New York-based DubShot Records Distribution is the premier destination for cutting-edge reggae and dancehall music from Jamaica and around the world. Founded in 2008 by reggae music industry veteran, Christoffer Mannix Schlarb, the label has grown from a NYC boutique digital destination to a powerhouse in reggae and dancehall distribution around the globe. With a strategic partnership with ADA/Warner they have had success with a strong roster of talent and tremendous catalog of songs. Their innovative approach to technology with production and marketing Caribbean music around the world has set them apart as the go-to destination for reggae, dub, and dancehall music distribution and partnership. The DubShot Records Long Island Reggae Festival with The Bad Boys of Reggae Inner Circle, Wayne Wonder, IRIEspect, Max Glazer and Federation Sound will take place Sunday, June 28th 2026 at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, NY 7PM-10PM. Parking is available on site and guests in attendance are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. For updates, call Nassau County Parks at (516) 572-0200 or visit NassauCountyNY.gov/parks.

The Reggae band IRIE TIME invites you to listen to a powerful song that delivers an important message for the healing of the world - "IRIE ITES"
Listen and enjoy "IRIE ITES" Here on YouTube The lyrics capture a classic reggae message: unity, peace, and a return to a more innocent, childlike way of seeing the world. CLICK HERE FOR LYRICS AND MORE “Dream a world of harmony… without hatred, without war” taps into a theme you’ll hear across a lot of roots reggae—very much in the spirit of artists like Bob Marley, where music isn’t just for vibes, it’s also about social vision and healing. That “world all children see” line is especially powerful—it suggests that peace isn’t something complicated we have to invent, but something we’ve kind of forgotten as we grow up. www.IrieTime.com

Their first three albums: Cymande (1972), Second Time Round (1973) and Promised Heights (1974) combined jazz, funk, soul, and Caribbean grooves to create a unique sound of their own; music that was both political and spiritual.

It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows or music.
