Dear Alki UCC,
Our Worship and Music Team is excited to launch our new series, This Neighborhood. In this chaotic time in our country, let us pause, put on a comfortable pair of sneakers and begin again with the empathy, love of neighbor, warmth, understanding and wonder that Mister Rogers modeled to the world through his television show.
Fred Rogers said, “Childhood isn’t just something we ‘get through.’ It’s a big journey, and it’s one we’ve all taken. Most likely, though, we’ve forgotten how much we had to learn along the way about ourselves and others.”
This series is an invitation to reengage with the journey of childhood, to reconnect with the child within each of us and consider the lessons we’ve learned along the way.
We begin this Sunday with "The Sanctuary of Silence."
It’s no coincidence that each episode of Mister Rogers begins with a traffic light flashing yellow. Slow down. Be mindful. We all need time and space to process our feelings that are, in Fred Roger’s words, “mentionable and manageable.” Let us welcome slowness and silence as we enter This Neighborhood.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

June 28 Annual Meeting Recap
|

Our annual congregational meeting last Sunday, woven together with our worship service, included beautiful music, prayers of thanksgiving and lots of productive communication. Pastor Emily and Council Moderator Julia P. led us through the mix.
Following the offertory, we broke into small “listening circles” so that everyone could talk about their concerns and hopes for Alki UCC. Council members facilitated each group (Pastor Emily led the Zoom group), and when we all returned to the sanctuary, the leaders shared what was said. We demonstrated a remarkable degree of consensus about our church community. The strongest hopes centered on stable pastoral leadership, welcoming younger generations, improving communication, strengthening financial sustainability, and remaining deeply engaged in ministry with the wider community.
Gary gave his treasurer’s report, presenting the proposed annual budget, which included an update since our June 21 preview: to create a full-time position for Pastor Emily. The budget was approved unanimously, followed by applause. Our service/meeting ended with a few words from our pastor and closing benediction.
Pastor Emily will be taking some vacation during part of July and start working full time on August 1. Also, the process will begin shortly to call her as our settled pastor, an event to be celebrated!
Full meeting minutes will be available soon; contact me if you want to see them.

Hello, Neighbor!
Alki UCC July/August Worship Series
|
Our July and August worship series at Alki UCC is This Neighborhood, based on the beloved children’s television show, "Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood."
We’ll sing classic songs such as It’s a Beautiful Day in This Neighborhood, It’s You I Like and It’s Such a Good Feeling. Each week will focus on a particular core message that Mister Rogers taught and embodied.
We will have some special visits from neighbors and encounter Scripture in imaginative ways with our own travels to make-believe.
If you’ve never watched the show, or it’s been awhile, we invite you to visit the official Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood YouTube Channel and enjoy!

One Parish, One Prisoner (OPOP) Update
|
Any day now, our friend, Rihan, will start their work-release program and move out of the Washington Correctional Facility for Women (WCCW) and into a transitional home in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood.
She will need basic support with clothing, hygiene products
and other essentials to help her settle
into this new environment.
— Monetary Donations Only, Please —
Here's your chance to help Rihan in this critical time of transition:
The OPOP team is holding a fundraising event after worship on Sunday, July 12, in the front lobby. We will be offering marigold seeds, books, Joe Aprile's matted art and greeting cards, and more, so please stop by and help us support Rihan on this big next step!
If you decide to donate to help the OPOP team, please provide monetary support only, no items. This is because of the strict prison regulations and proof of receipts needed on anything donated, which our team is ready to handle. Thank you so much for your support! — Emily D for the OPOP Team

Experience Mutual Transformation We seek to equip parishes—faith communities small or large, traditional or rag-tag—in every American town
to build supportive pre-release relationships
with just one person returning
to their community from prison.

We're organizing a series of Summer Fun Rides after worship on Sundays ... Join the fun!
Some of us will ride bikes, some might ride in a car and some may pick up the 775 Free Shuttle. We're all riding something, and we're meeting at the West Seattle Water Taxi by Marination Ma Kai at (after hospitality hour). Jeff W will provide timing details at Sunday worship.
We'll take the Taxi to the new Seattle Waterfront (have you seen it yet?), walk a half block to Molly Moon's and enjoy a warm summer afternoon together, after which we can all filter back at our own convenience.
Please see me at worship this Sunday if you have any questions. I'll also provide any updates to the Summer Fun Ride logistics.

Merciful God, we give you thanks. We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.
We pray for all those who grieve. May they find strength and peace.
We hold in prayer and ask for comfort
to all who mourn the loss of Jessie,
a dear friend of Julia C.
We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We lift them up to your loving care.
We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.
In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
