Alki UCC Weekly Messenger August 13, 2026
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

It’s been such a gift to welcome and celebrate our neighbors this summer at Alki UCC in our Mister Rogers-themed worship series, This Neighborhood!

Our visiting neighbors have come from Kol HaNeshamah synagogue, Alcoholics Anonymous, the League of Women Voters and Alki Community Council.

This past week we welcomed Sura Hart, a certified trainer with the International Center for Nonviolent Communication. Sura delighted us with her puppets, Giraffe and Jackall, who represented not particular people, but modes of being from which we all operate.

We were reminded that 1) Needs are universal, 2) All actions are attempts to meet our precious human needs, and 3) Every moment each of us is doing the best we can to meet our needs (service video linked here).

This coming Sunday we welcome Gabriel Behrend, leader of the Dharma group that meets in our building every Monday evening. Check out his bio below!

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Our Neighbor this Sunday: Gabriel Behrend
Gabriel Behrend started the Alki Dharma Community three years ago in April along with his cofounder, his lovely wife Lilah. Gabriel has studied Buddhism for the last 20 years with a focus on Tibetan Buddhism. He spent a year in Kathmandu Nepal studying at the international center for Buddhist studies where he immersed himself in the philosophy and practice of Tibetan Buddhism.

Many years ago he attended some Buddhist Recover Network meetings and was inspired by the meeting’s structure that invited participants to meditate together, bring readings to share, and discuss how the practice and different readings offered each week were meaningful in their lives and relative to their practice. He felt that this form of meeting was a perfect way for people from all backgrounds to join together and celebrate the dharma and build local community centered on discovering the life changing value of the Buddhas teachings.

He feels very grateful to Alki UCC for welcoming the sangha (group of Buddhist practitioners that support each other on the path) into their space and supporting their efforts in being loving, compassionate, introspective and peaceful community members.

He is eager to share any knowledge he has of the Buddha Dharma with others and hopes that all being know peace and the causes of peace and be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.

Noon to 7:00 pm
Visit the Alki UCC Bracelet-Making Booth

Alki Beach Pride is a vital opportunity for our church to remind our community that each one of us is worthy and loved by God, exactly as we are!

For the fourth Summer in a row, we will host a bracelet-making booth. It is always a big hit, and something we are becoming known for!

Our booth is a welcome respite for families to come and sit for awhile and do an easy activity together. Young adults have been known to spend hours at our booth making bracelets! Members of the congregation and neighbors stringing beads side-by-side, chatting and getting to know one another, it is such fun! There are always profound moments. I remember last year creating a bracelet alongside a pre-teen who was just beginning to name their identity, and helping them find the bead colors to express it to the world.

Please consider coming to the booth to show up for our neighbors and join in with bracelet-making.

You'll also enjoy live music, entertainment, a dance contest and more than 100 vendors and community booths along the secured street closure.

It's a fantastic day to connect, celebrate, and have fun!

You're invited to stop on by to welcome visitors, help with bracelet-making and share the spirit of Alki UCC.

Message of Appreciation from Bonita
Our own Bonita C called to let everyone in the Alki UCC community know how grateful she is for all the caring and support you’ve shown her over the last several months. Great gratitude to all!!
In Our Circle of Prayer
Merciful God, we give you thanks.
We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve. May they find strength and peace.

The UCC mourns the death of Rev. Derek Terry:

We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We lift them up to your loving care.

We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.

In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Last Summer Fun Ride (of the season) this Sunday
(weather permitting)
Join the fun! We take the Taxi to the new Seattle Waterfront (have you seen it yet?), walk a half block to Molly Moon's and enjoy a warm summer afternoon together, after which we can all filter back at our own convenience.

Some of us will ride bikes, some might ride in a car and some may pick up the 775 Free Shuttle. We're all riding something, and we meet at the West Seattle Water Taxi by Marination Ma Kai (after hospitality hour). Jeff W provides details at Sunday worship.
Please see me at worship  if you have any questions.
