Dear Alki UCC,
This past Sunday our worship theme was “Homecoming Sunday.” (sermon inked here).
What does it mean to come home?
Sometimes coming home means returning to a place that formed us. We’ve been to that place before, and we’re grateful. But it’s hard too. Our bodies hold onto the stickiness of past hurt. It’s like that dream trope where our limbs are flailing futilely but we’re stuck and unable to move forward. (do you know the one?!)
We can only move forward when we begin to let go. When we stop striving from a place of scarcity and simply accept where we are.
Sometimes coming home is remembering who we are. Who we’ve always been. We’re beloved, Church. When we know we’re loved, we’re already home.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Announcing New Mission Update Process
for Sunday Worship
|
It's an experiment! Our goal is to create a smoother, clearer way to keep the congregation informed and the service flowing.
Instead of folks coming forward to speak, email your announcement in advance for inclusion in the Sunday bulletin. The congregation will be referred to their bulletins for the information, and team representatives who are present will stand so folks know who to contact for details.
Submission deadline: Wednesday by noon for Sunday bulletin listing. Email your mission update to office@alkiucc.org. Thank you!

KHN High Holy Days Continue
|
Alki UCC's partner synagogue, Kol HaNeshamah (KHN), and Jewish communities around the world welcomed a new year with the observance of Rosh Hashanah (“Head of the Year”) last Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12.
In observance of the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, many Jews fast on Yom Kippur (September 20 until sundown and all day on September 21), wear white and refrain from wearing leather or other luxuries. The Ten Days of Awe (or High Holy Days) are a time for spiritual accounting and renewal, and an opportunity to reflect on and repair relationships, both human relationships and the human-divine relationship. A few days after Yom Kippur, the joyous holiday of Sukkot marks the end of the harvest season, followed by Simchat Torah (“Rejoicing with the Torah”), marking the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle. Note: The beautiful “paper cut” banner at the front of the Sanctuary, which will be in place through the High Holy days, depicts honey comb, pomegranate, apples and other bounty to celebrate the sweet promise of a new year.

|
Merciful God, we give you thanks. We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.
We pray for all those who grieve. May they find strength and peace.
We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We lift them up to your loving care.
We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.
In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
