Alki UCC Weekly Messenger October 1, 2026
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Over, under. Over, under. Over, over. Oops. Back up. Under. Over, under.

Our church life is like this too. We balance outward service with inward growth. Over, under.

Our weaving retreat offered us the opportunity to grow within and between us. We learned a new skill as we got to know one another on a deeper level and reflect on our own stories. You can get a taste of our retreat from our slideshow here,

Mark September 24-26 in your 2027 calendar for the next Alki UCC Fall Retreat at Pilgrim Firs!

Our brand new Alki UCC Open Gym is an opportunity for outward service. Our goal is to create a space in the community where parents and caregivers can bring their children to play safely all year round, no matter the weather.

We were thrilled to welcome six families for the inaugural Open Gym this past Monday. The toddlers had a lot of fun, and caregivers enjoyed having a place to gather to get to know one another. Sign up to help host here, it’s fun!

Over, under. Over, under.

Sometimes we do so much outward action that we find that we’ve neglected ourselves. Sometimes we are so focused inward that we realize we’ve neglected our neighbors.

There are seasons for one more than the other. And perfect balance is not attainable or even needed. We are always a lopsided basket. But faith community can help us get a bit more in balance. Outward and inward.

Over, under. Over, under.

Over, over. Oops.

There is grace here.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Alki UCC Open Gym was inspired by an email sent to the church this summer by a local parent who was struggling to find nearby places to take her one-year-old that were both free and indoors for rainy days. The collaboration between church and neighbor began, as we dreamed together about how to create a gathering and play space for community.

Our goal is to create a space in the community where parents and caregivers can bring their children to play safely all year round, no matter the weather. We hope you’ll join us!

Registration required. Contact the Church Office.

In Our Circle of Prayer
Merciful God, we give you thanks.
We give you gratitude for the beauty of this life, for our relationships and our community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve. May they find strength and peace.

We pray for all who seek comfort, guidance or healing.
We lift them up to your loving care.

We pray for our wider world.
We pray for the earth, your good creation entrusted to our care. We pray for those affected by violence, war, and disaster. We pray for leaders to act with integrity and be held accountable for their actions.

In prayer, O God, you hear us and know us. In prayer, we are unburdened and restored. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Please Help with Easy Volunteer Task!
Yesterday, I worked with a crew to change out all the office/hallways fluorescent bulbs to LED.

To keep the cost down, we need volunteers to help dispose of the old fluorescent tubes, currently bundled in sets of 10.

Please take one bundle from the bench in the office hallway to your local Ace Hardware, where they will recycle them for free.

Many hands make light work! Thank you

With more than 30 years of teaching experience in the Pacific Northwest, instructor Diane Jacobsen shares her passion: “I am so excited to introduce dancers of all ages to the basics and beyond! No partners needed so everyone can go at their own pace!”

Reminder:
New Mission Update Process
for Sunday Worship
It's an experiment! Our goal is to create a smoother, clearer way to keep the congregation informed and the service flowing.

Instead of folks coming forward to speak, email your announcement in advance for inclusion in the Sunday bulletin. The congregation will be referred to their bulletins for the information, and team representatives who are present will stand so folks know who to contact for details.

Submission deadline: Wednesday by noon for Sunday bulletin listing. Email your mission update to office@alkiucc.org. Thank you!

Tuesday Zoom Bible Study
in Session
Join us via Zoom for our ongoing Tuesday Bible Study. Led by Pastor
Emily and Rev. Penny, we meet from noon to 1:30 pm for spiritual practice, deep listening and wisdom-seeking.

Faith formation is what happens when we set aside our own agendas, individually and collectively, and show up for God. Our faith is formed when we listen to our own inner longing in response to God’s call in our hearts.

We welcome you for the journey!

You will receive your own unique link
to access Bible Study.

Attend all sessions, or occasionally ... whatever works for you!!
