Preparing to sail the deep "Blues" sea Oct 29-Nov 5
Hi all...
It's your Blues Festival e-Guide Editor aka Michele Lundeen the "Queen of Steam!" Getting ready for cruisin', jammin', dancin', and enjoyin' music and friends. #37 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise is coming right up Oct 29-Nov 5 and you know it's gonna be another wang, dang doodle! Our Blues Festival Guide Publisher Kaati (at far left) will also be sailing #37!

The cruise itself features nearly non-stop bluesin' and will also include onshore visits to Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Loreto. There's are theme nights like "Hometown Blues" where you can show support for your favorite local artists or blues society, "Kings & Queens" night (either Bluesy or from the Sea... or), "Halloween," "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of The Dead), "Decade Night" (dress up from your favorite decade), and "Bluesin' LRBC Gear." I'm into the theme nights and have been compiling a variety of choices (and I have too many now! HA!)

I'm honored to once again be one of the Pro-Am Jamarama Hosts. If you're a player, pack your instrument and find me in The Crow's Nest on Weds Nov 2nd from 7:30-9:30pm and signup to jam. Or just come and have fun and hang with us! You never know who will showup! Jammers, feel free to hit me up ahead of time.

There's a pre-party on Friday Oct 28 at Riverwalk Gulf Club (see the article in the Oct 13 E-Guide) featuring artists including Big LLou Johnson, Randy Macdonald (of Tommy Castro's band), guitarist extraordinaire Laura Chavez, some of the area's top, award-winning talent, and always some surprise guests.

Say "Hi" if you see me onboard and/or come jam or just hang! Maybe get a pic with the Blues Festival Guide magazine! We're all one big Blues framily!

Delta Blues Museum new Virtual Tours
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - Delta Blues Museum will soon expand its Virtual Tours, thanks to funding received from the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area (MDNHA).

The newest online video feature will focus on Blues legend Robert Johnson, as the Museum looks to create additional web-based content chronicling other important "anchor artists" of Blues music.

The MDNHA grants program funds projects around five theme s —The River and The Land, The Blues, Freedom, Creativity Beyond Cotton, and Diverse Communities. With this funding, Delta Blues Museum will not only produce the Robert Johnson video Field Trip but will also add five new Virtual Tours led by current musicians with connections to Blues legends. Additionally, the Museum will develop a snapshot of the life and music of Howlin’ Wolf through a new interactive Explore and Learn feature.

Museum Director Shelley Ritter, who recently unveiled new permanent exhibits in the Museum gallery, is seeking to similarly expand the Museum's website offerings to reach new audiences and enhance the museum experience for online visitors. "We are thrilled to be able to explore the legacies of Robert Johnson and Howlin’ Wolf in more immersive and interactive ways," Ritter said, adding, "We also look forward to documenting the contributions and influences that these 'anchor artists' and others featured in our gallery have had on other musicians. Funding partners like MDNHA offer us a path to provide more educational resources online and create lifelong learning opportunities for Blues fans of all ages."

All of Delta Blues Museum's Virtual Tours and Field Trips are free to the public. Viewer donations are suggested and appreciated. Online access is available here.

Sony Music Buys Rights to Muddy Waters Full Catalog
Sony Music Publishing has completed a deal with the estate of the iconic bluesman Muddy Waters, to buy the rights to the musician's entire catalog, effectively worldwide. Known to many as the father of Chicago blues, McKinley ‘Muddy Waters’ Morganfield is considered to be one of the most influential figures in blues and rock-and-roll in the US and globally.

According to Music Business Worldwide, this is what Waters' daughter Mercy Morganfield had to say about the sale: "My father's legacy is a vital part of not only musical history but American history. Making sure future generations are aware of the way blues legends like Dad, Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, and so many others have shaped other genres of music from Rock and Roll to Hip-Hop is so important."

"We don't want these names to get lost in history and in the telling and retelling of their stories. I believe we have a partner in Sony who can help keep that flame alive and expand our reach, giving my father his rightful place in music history, a place we all believe he and so many others deserve. I am looking forward to the work ahead."

Sony Music Publishing CEO Jon Platt added: "Muddy Waters was without a doubt one of the most impactful songwriters in modern music. His vibrant, expressive sound is embodied in music today and continues to inspire generations."

“We look forward to working with the Muddy Waters Estate to build upon its enduring songwriting legacy."

The monetary values involved in the deal have not been disclosed by either party.
Tales From The Road: Our Alabama Travels
By Gabi Mendick
Music Maker
In August, Music Maker took a field trip to Georgia and Alabama to meet, document, and discover a few of America’s musical treasures.

Wednesday Aug 24th

Wednesday morning at 8am–a late start for a Music Maker field trip., Music Maker Executive Director Tim Duffy, Selden Leonard, a recent college graduate and family friend of the Duffy’s, and I, pack up Tim’s Suburban with all of the microphones, tripods, lights, and miscellaneous gear we’re hoping we’ll get a chance to use, and hit the road.

Along the way we pull off at a rest stop for a “flat meat” sandwich. I tell Tim I’ve never heard someone refer to cold cuts that way and he explains that’s what touring musicians call it. When you’re on the road and not big-time enough to eat proper green room meals, all you get is the compact, preserved flat meat. Tim opts for a protein powder shake.

After lunch, we keep on keeping on to David Bryant’s house in Oxford, Georgia, just east of Atlanta. I’m immediately drawn to David’s garden; three kittens run around the greenery decorated with found objects. The inside of his home is also full of antiques and photographs. David leads us to a small nook in the back of the house, a gallery of family photos: his mother, Music Maker partner artist Cora Mae Bryant, his brother Tony Bryant, his grandfather, guitar legend Curley Weaver, and many others.

David holds his family and his musical heritage close. But when David picks up a guitar, a sound resonates that is all his own. He may play a standard blues or gospel song, or make up a lighthearted tune on the spot. His playing is avant-garde, dissonant, and pretty weird. But his strumming is grounded by his honest voice. …continue reading

Dennis Johnson :: REVELATION
Critically acclaimed slide guitar player, Dennis Johnson’s latest Revelation is an album of blues rockers and roots standouts mixed with gospel and country elements, and an emotional slide guitar-infused instrumental.

The rhythm section is anchored by legendary drummer Anton Fig, (Late Night with David Letterman, Joe Bonamassa) and bassist/backing vocalist Jonathan Stoyanoff, known for his work with Joe Craven and who's performed with Johnson for years. Playing piano and B3 is the phenomenal Bob Fridzema (Walter Trout, Joanna Shaw Taylor). Revelation was engineered by Chris Bell renowned for his works with artists like Samantha Fish, The Eagles, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Dennis Johnson’s early passion for slide drove him to teach himself guitar and through a career that includes three albums to date. “I learned a lot making this record from arranging and finding great grooves, to recording unique guitar tones,” he said. “It always is about getting the groove first. If you can find it, the rest flows naturally.”

Revelation is a transformation in Johnson’s slide playing to even higher levels.

This day actually also has to do with the protection of wolfs. You could even make some donations to animal and protection groups such as Wolf Haven.
